deprenyl is exactly, what it is prescribed for and what it does? You

have peaked my curiosity...

Where is this helping you the most?

Sexual or memory?

Or is it helping in other areas as well?

ALL,

This drug is used to treat Parkinsons disease. See abstract below:

DEPRENYL

Monoamine oxidase B inhibitors. Current status and future potential

CNS Drugs (New Zealand), 1996, 6/3 (217-236)

Specific inhibitors of monoamine oxidase type B (MAO-B) constitute a

novel and expanding pharmacological class. At present, only one

compound from this class is marketed, selegiline (deprenyl). Other

MAO-B inhibitors that are in various stages of development include

lazabemide and mofegiline, which are differentiated from selegiline

by their greater specificity for MAO-B and the absence of active

metabolites. The role of MAO-B in the catabolism of amines

(essentially, dopamine and phenylethylamine) and the acceleration of

the neurodegenerative process (i.e. oxidative stress) justifies the

most common indications for these compounds - Parkinson's disease,

Alzheimer's disease, pathological aging and, possibly, depression.

The possibility that MAO-B inhibitors may antagonise the evolution of

neurodegenerative disorders needs further scrutiny. Selegiline is the

most extensively studied MAO-B inhibitor and is marketed for

Parkinson's disease in most Western countries. A dosage of 10 mg/day

improves motor symptoms and delays the need for levodopa in de novo

patients. Adverse effects are rare and trivial, although some reports

of changes in blood pressure have to be considered seriously. Long

term clinical trials with new MAO-B inhibitors are not available.

Current data suggest that these drugs are well tolerated and have a

low potential for drug interactions.

I copied this from the below link:

Deprenyl also inhibits the degrading of neurotransmitters and boosts

the release of dopamine. Dopamine is crucial to sex drive, fine

motor control, immune function and motivation.

Increased libido was found to be a side effect in the use of

deprenyl by parkensen's sufferers.

The most noticable for me has been mental focus and motivation.

Sexually I have begun to think about sex a BUNCH more. Let's put it

this way, I won't be online much more tonight...

15 ml cost me $50. Looks like it will last me two months as the

dosage is 3 drops twice daily, 5 days per week.

My doctor feels that considering dopamine has an effect on libido

and, I am secondary hypogondic, and that dopamine is produced at the

hypothalimus, that perhaps this would be a nice thing to try.

Now that I have researched it more, I see that it has been indicated

to extend life by preventing the oxidation of protiens in the brain

among other things...

> What exactly is deprenyl?

The generic name is Selegiline (see pp. 188-189 of Shippen's book).

> How does it work...?

It extends the active life of dopamine in the brain. People with

Alzheimer's can reduce their L-dopa dosage when Selegiline is added.

I take it in addition to HCG and it reduces my HCG dsosage because my

hypo/pituitary axis becomes more responsive. Interesting thing is my

required dosage of both HCG and Selegiline have gradually gone down

over time.

> and how much does it cost?

IIRC, it's very cheap if you get the generic (i.e., Selegiline).

What dose are you taking?

3 drops twice daily. Each drop is 1 mg so, 6 mg per day. I will be

asking my doctor about the dosage next visit as I have learned much

more on the subject. I do notice that I get a great boost from it

in the AM and again int he PM and may want to do 3 doses per day,

maybe just 2 drops each, but will wait to discuss with her before

changing anything.

I guess I was so tuned into the low T thing when I read Shippen that

I did not notice it. Back to my book!

Hey y,

It is probably very hard to say whether it is deprenyl or

testosterone that is giving you the extra sex drive noh? Since you

just started on the pellets, I would personally believe that is the

ticket.

I'll take it either way. But I can tell a specific rise and fall in

my mood and focus right after a deprenyl dose and then again right

before the next. One reason I will likely split the dosage 3 times

per day as opposed to two.

And... sex Friday night was completely viagra free. That was nice.

I'm interested in giving deprenyl a try (well first I will have to

do a little more research since I am still really not sure what it

is!).

Wondering if you can tell me the prescription information. How much

would a doctor prescribe, what would a prescription look like? That

way I might be able to get my doctor to prescribe it for me when I

see him next Wednesday.

As for what a prescription for Deprenyl looks like, I have no idea.

I take a compounded liquid from Kronos Pharm in Vegas. The dosage

is 3 drops, twice daily, 5 days per week. Each drop is 1 mg of

deprenyl. Let me warn you though, this stuff tastes terrible. My

doctor suggested I take it in my coffee or some other drink. I

beleive her to be mistaken and will tell her so next time I see

her. When I took it via a drink, I saw some improvement, but when I

took it as directed, as a subligual, it was awsome. My doctor uses

it herself. I hope she will try it subligually as it is much

better, at least for me. I put 3 drops under my tounge and let it

disapate.

Personally, I want to avoid adding any more drugs if possible. Being

on too many drugs is just not the best thing for anybody... but on

the other hand, that stuff sounds at least interesting.

Prescription might look like this:

Selegeline 5 mg tab.

#30

Take one P.O. QD

Refill x 3

Generic deprenyl (selegeline) is pretty inexpensive.

Since deprenyl is also an MAO inhibitor, are there any foods which

need to be avoided when taking deprenyl? I have heard vaguely a few

years ago that when taking MAO inhibitors, you also need to avoid

consuming certain food products. Anyone have any info?

Yes. Cheese, Wine, and Chocolate. Also, no decongestants.

Ha! I eat and drink tons of those! Never had a problem, but I take a

relatively low dose.

That's because Deprenyl is a MOA-B (not MAO-A) selective inhibitor.

Reactions are very very rare (if any can be attributed to it).
