A Question for Jerry Mittelman...

Hi, Jerry,

I noticed that you are a dentist who is into holistic

medicine. I have a problem that I am wondering you can

help me with.

My dentist has done a root canal on one of my teeth.

It now has a temporary filling in it. There was an

infection in the root. The tooth is the third from the

back, upper left.

My dentist says I have two choices:

1) Put a crown on the tooth...or,

2) Pull it and replace it with a bridge which would

require crowning the tooth behind and tooth in front.

I really don't want to do either of these choices,

especially the choice that requires keeping the dead

tooth. I have done a lot of research and I don't want

a dead tooth in my living system.

Do I have any other options? I am going to see my

dentist on Saturday and I hoe I can tell him what I

really want to do.

Thank you so much,

Aimee

Subject: Stained teeth

Is Tooth Whitening for You? We see and hear ads for

tooth whitening on

TV, radio, in magazines - everywhere. We advise

against it.

F. Eichmiller, DDS, director of the ADA's research

center, explained

that whitening can often open naturally occurring

pores within teeth.

(Dentistry Today)

These open pores can cause temporary sensitivity to

air as well as hot

and cold food and drinks, a common side effect of

tooth whitening. He

suggests a 'remineralizing' formula he must feel will

help overcome the

problem.

These 'pores' make teeth more easily stained by foods

in the future,

and so the 'whitening' is temporary. It invites the

'need' for more

whitenings and more damage to the surface of the

teeth. . . unless the

'remineralizing formula' is fool-proof..

Another 'option' is an implant - which I would not have done.

We have a root canal report - short and informative - that we'd be willing

to

send you if you reply with your pob or street address.

My two front have root canals from a bicycle injury when I was a kid. They

were chipped and cracked. They started turning yellow when I was 28. I

went to my dentist and he did root canals. I'm sure this is all bad. How

bad? Can they be whitened?
