New and toddler with autism, huge appetite and possible worms-Help

Hi. I have a little boy who is almost 3 years old. He developed

autism a year ago. For the past 10 months we have been trying to help

him through biomedical means - diet and supplements to heal the gut.

I spend several hours a day researching the biomedical treatment of

autism to try to help him get better. Most parents who implement all

the interventions that we have get some progress. Unfortunately, my

son has continued to regress and is very unhappy. I feel like there

is something stopping our interventions from working.

An interesting thing about my son is that he has a HUGE appetite.

Most kids with autism are picky eaters but he will eat anything and is

always begging for food. He eats more than an adult. 2-3 pounds of

turkey, 10 large carrots at a time. I can never cook fast enough. He

does suffer from malabsorption and candida as do almost all kids with

autism. Some have told me that these are the likely causes of his

appetite. Others have told me that with an appetite that big he must

have a very large tapeworm living inside him. We did a stool test

last year and it was negative but I understand that those tests are

often not accurate. I had had parasites through travel but I thought I

had gotten rid of them before he was born through an herbal cleanse.

I understand that there are also blood tests for specific parasites

and worms. I could ask the doctor if we could run those tests. I

understand that the drugs to treat parasites are very hard on the

liver. The alternative doctor that we see said that herbs like black

walnut and wormwood could be dangerous for a 3-year old. However,

leaving parasites in his body could be worse. Nevertheless, I would

feel more confident treating him for parasites/worms if I was sure he

had them. Also, it would be good to know if we were dealing with

microscopic bugs or something much larger because it would probably

influence how we would proceed. I also do not want to try a whole

bunch of little things that aren't that powerful if we are dealing

with a persistent creature. I have already tried putting cloves in

his pear juice and it didn't do anything. I want to create a solid

game plan.

I have looked a bit at the Web sites that have info. about Dr.

and there is a lot there. I don't know where to start and I am

anxious to act. I called some veterinary clinics and they said

tapeworm/parasites are easy to get rid of (cats & dogs). I don't really

know how much help there is for humans. I feel like we should be

doing this under the supervision of a doctor or naturopath, especially

since he is so young and the way he eats and begs for food I just

picture this huge creature living inside him. If it comes out alive

it will be scary and if we kill it inside him it might create a very

big die-off that might be hard on his body.

I should also say that my son is not overweight, nor underweight but

he has a belly that really sticks out and is very firm. He has normal

bowel movements every day. Sometimes output does not seem to reflect

input. I might have seen tiny white specks in his stool on occasion

but I am not sure. My son will eat any food. We currently have him

on a diet that consists of mostly meat and vegetables. He really

loves his meat and needs protein first thing in the morning. He has

even woken up in the middle of the night asking for turkey.

Does anyone have any suggestions for the best way to proceed, both in

terms of testing and treatment? What is the likelihood that he has a

large tapeworm inside him? How easy will it be to get rid of this and

prevent it from coming back?

Sorry this post is so long. If anyone has time to read it and has

insight into our problem, I'd love to hear from you.

Thanks,

Hope Sylvie

Hope Sylvie:

I am also the mother of autistic children (3), all of whom have made

amazing progress towards recovery. Here's my advice:

(1) DIET. Gluten free, casein free, which you may already be

implementing. I also do not allow my children to consume anything

with a dye, artificial ingredient, or artificial flavor. Since your

son will eat anything, I STRONGLY, STRONGLY urge you to get him on

the Specific Carbohydrate Diet ( " SCD " ) IMMEDIATELY. Parents have

cured their children of autism just with the diet. He will stop

begging to be fed constantly. Information on SCD:

http://www.pecanbread.com/

http://www.breakingtheviciouscycle.info/

Parental support group for parents with children on the spectrum

implementing SCD: pecanbread/

(2) ENZYMES. I use Houston's & I use all 3 (no-fenol, AFP

Peptizyde, & HN Zyme Prime) for all meals. Link:

To learn more about enzymes, consider visiting DeFelice's

website: http://www.enzymestuff.com/index.htm I bought and read

DeFelice's book which is shown on the home page of that

website. It's excellent. She also runs an excellent group:

(3) NAET. Here's the protocol you want if you can get it:

http://www.aaamps.net/ If you can't do that protocol, it would still

be worth it to try NAET. The reason I wanted to do NAET is that I was

continually seeing autistic adults post that NAET helped them eat

more foods & lessened their allergies.

(4) ENVIRONMENTAL CHANGES. I follow Dr. 's radical beliefs in

this area. I started making changes in my home after I read

Slimak's article:

http://www.immuneweb.org/articles/slimak.html and Dr. 's " The

Cure for All Diseases. " Slimak, an environmental expert,

postulates that only 1/3 of the problem with autism is food

allergies: the other 2/3 is due to environmental allergies & toxins,

particularly VOCs, which Dr. also warns against. If you have a

gas heating system, a gas dryer, a house full of carpeting, flame

retardent mattresses, polyester clothing & bedding, and you use store

bought cleaners & detergent . . . well you have a lot of work to do.

Personally, I treat my kids as though they have MCS (Multiple

Chemical Sensitivity) and order products designed for those with this

ailment. Try: http://www.janices.com/ for starters. I order shampoo &

soaps from Self Health. I am also starting to order organic clothing.

Dr. was right on the money with her house clean-up advice. Go

for it!

(5) ABA & SPeech therapy.

(6) CRANIAL SACRAL THERAPY. They will work on your child and

then say: " I think you're going to see big changes in so-and-so this

week " and sure enough you will. One time I was told " He will be more

emotional this week " and that week he was weepy and told me he loved

me for the first time. It's mind blowing stuff. No miracles

overnight, but the progress overall is terrific.

(7) Auditory Integration Therapy ( " AIT " ). Before AIT, my 2nd child

would constantly chew on his hand or his shirt. He would also hold

his hands over his ears a lot. Both stopped completely with AIT

overnight. He also became unbelievably independent overnight with

AIT. He had to open his car (and any other) door and shut it himself.

This was unexpected and a little tough to deal with, but any signs of

independence were welcome at that point. He could then dress himself

too.

(8) CHIROPRACTIC CARE. One theory behind chiropractic care

is that if your spine is healthy and properly aligned, you'll be

healthy and your body will heal itself. This is so true (if you find

a good chiro!!!). None of my 3 kids have had to take any antibiotics

or fever reducers (they're bad too unless you've got HIGH fever)

this winter which is a minor miracle for us. We were constantly sick

last year.

(9) PRISM LENSES & EYE THERAPY. See

http://www.autism.org/interview/kaplan.html

http://www.autisticvision.com/index.htm

10) DO NOT EVER VACCINATE YOUR CHILD AGAIN. I mean it. Some parents

started down the road to recovery only to have a well-intentioned

though ignorant doctor talk them into one more shot, usually the

Tetanus, only to have the child slip away for good. JUST SAY NO!

Other links of interest in your research:

a) http://www.autismrecovered.com. We use the supplement used to help

cure this child of autism: gluconutrients. HIGHLY recommend them.

c) http://www.factsformedia.com/

d) http://www.danasview.net/

f) /messages

How's that for starters? You can email me privately any time with any

questions or for some help. To give you hope, my most affected child

was diagnosed as severely autistic last January and now no one not

connected with autism has any clue that anything is wrong with him. I

have not done any chelation as I believe at this time it's too harsh

on their weakened bodies.

Best of luck in this trying time!

Lorna,

An excellent post! Do you mind if I borrow this for my local Autism

group?
