Guest guest
Hi again....as I mentioned before, I have traveled a long road with TMJ problems. Here are some insights...these are my opinions, experiences and research I have done...other experiences could be just the opposite of mine! Using a repositioning splint is usually the first attempt to help. It is conservative, reversible, and helps many people. This is a hard plastic splint that some (like me) wear 24 hours a day. It takes a bit of getting used to but then I was dependent on it. :-) It takes pressure off the joint by changing your bite. After the jaw was improved by the splint, I didn't even like to take it out to brush my teeth. Many docs believe this type of splint should be limited to 6 months. If you still are having pain after 6 months they will often discuss surgery. My doc was determined not to give up on me. This was well intentioned but I was in the splint for 18 months. It changed my jaw alignment so much I just now can get my back teeth together properly-- two years after that splint!! This is long so I will stop here. I will post another message about surgery. Those interested can read it and if this is boring to some they will know to skip it!
