Whenever I see she has changed, I have to go and look for her other clothes. She gets very upset if I ask where they are. I guess she thinks I'll make her put them back on. ; ) As for potty training...Bridget was trained at school and would have regular accidents at home. I started making her change herself, clean up, and rinse out her wet or soiled clothes. It didn't take very many times before she started not having accidents. Good luck to you! I remember being so determined to potty train her that I sent her to preschool age 3 1/2 with training pants. They had so much trouble with that that they sent a note home, " could you please send her in pull ups? " so I kindof gave up - a little . I said 'oh well' and relaxed the issue. Sometimes it seems like I'm the only one in the house that cares. DH and her 3 older brothers don't even try to help with it. Quick story. Last Mon. night I had cleaned the house and was preparing for company. So I'm in the kitchen working on dinner and company is to arrive in only 15 min. Cassie came out to the kitchen to watch me and sat at the table. Then it hit me.... I smelled something. OH MAN. I lost it. Her pull up had scooted to the side and diarrhea was all over the chair. I've been at my wits end for several months now. Her " Language " per Dr. Phil would probably be videos. Veggie tales- Annie- Princess Bride-, W the POOH ,- stuff like that. They know how to " work the system " to get what they want. was passionate about videos too when younger. She still loves her exercise dance tape. I covered the label of each one with a file card and printed the name in black marker. She had to read the title to me before I would play it for her. She could sight read those tapes in preschool... so I got quite annoyed when her teachers would tell me that she " can't " read. Once you figure out where to hide - or lock up (how about a combination lock?)- the videos, use them as a reward system. For example on the weekend, in the morning tell her she can watch one after lunch if her pull up is dry. I used the Pampers First Steps and panty liners on the lower inside portion of the cast to help avoid any messes. I also put velcro on the front and back bottom of the cast and knit rite shirt. This helped keep the shirt out of the way. I found she was confusing the first step and the shirt on which one to try to pull down. She was able to get to the potty and pull the First Step down in time for successful potty going. The Feel and Learns from Pampers also help out a lot too. She will be able to feel when she's wet; hopefully, teaching when it's time to go. To teach her what it meant to "go", I let her run around in the back yard with nothing on until she went outside. Lexi was very close to potty training before the cast. My own fault, I decided to wait since the cast would throw her off a little. While she is only 21 months old, she tells me when she is wet and brings me a diaper when she is dirty too. Now that the cast is on, I am TERRIFIED to even think of potty training for fear of wetness getting into the cast. To all you moms who have trained while casted, please any advice is GREAT!! I also noticed you wrote Deshea you are double diapering. Isn't that hard to get 2 in there? We have gone down a size in diapers for Lexi and put 2 maxi pads inside and then cover in a pull up just to help keep the diaper in place better. It seems to be working for us thus far, even at night. Is your way easier/ better? Just looking for help in a confusing time!! However, I also always wipe her because she cannot reach to wipe. She started preschool this week and I have told them she is limited and must have assistance in going to the restroom. Maybe there is a good trick we can teach them that the older kids have learned. However, Carly's shoulders/arms are pushed up from the cast, thereby, shortening her arm length. THis is all that I need to do and it seemed to work...her cast never got wet and I only had to use one. We also had started potty training her before we found out she had scoliosis and would be put in a cast. Therefore, we put training on hold. After about three weeks in the cast, we decided to accelerate the training for several reasons. Our thoughts were once she was trained there would be less of a chance of the cast getting wet, diapering is a challenge (especially messy ones), and she was old enough and ready with a little encouragement. We found that she needed to be in regular panties in order to feel that she needed to go and realize that she was wet. However, we still have to help her. She cannot get on the potty by herself. She has trouble pulling her pants up and wiping. But she is trained. Like Deshea, we continue to put a pull-up or diaper on her at naptime and bedtime even though she rarely wets during this time. However, one night on vacation, I forgot to put something on her and of course this was the night she wet the bed. She actually was asleep with me and I happened to feel the bed was wet. Fortunately, God was watching over us and only small part of the cast got wet. I blow dryed the cast the best that I could and everything was fine. Hopefully this helps. How old is Lexie, what are her measurements, how long has she had scoliosis, has she been in a brace, etc. Sorry for the questions but I can't keep up with everyone. Guest guest Posted July 15, 2006 Report Share Posted July 15, 2006 My daughter Amelia (6) was potty trained at the age of 48 months. This included through the night with cotton underpants. I cannot claim that victory. She was in a typical pre school setting with three year olds. I kept her in pull ups and one day the two teachers told me to send her with about six pairs of cotton panties. I was shocked. Over the course of a year it worked! I slid back into pullups a couple of times only to have the teachers jump my case and ask me " do you want her potty trained or not? " I learned alot from that experience about having the expectation and patience that help Amelia be more like her typical peers then unlike them. Having said that I too am sending out an SOS. Amelia has yet to get the hang of wiping her bum. It winds up on her legs and the wall where the TP hangs around 30% of the time. Any tips on how to get her to focus on the task at hand? I do it for her most of the time and that is part of the problem. Still any tips would be appreciated. I am so proud of her potty training but there is this last hurdle. I guess I can answer my own question by allowing her to make a mess in the course of learning to do the task. But it's just a nasy process. " littlelollie@... They are wet, so maybe they will do a better job with the first wipe? It may just be that she's got a bit more poop left on her bum, which give her more to spread around, but I don't know how you'd communicate that... " are you really finished.... has all the poop fallen out? " or something like that. It's a hard concept to describe for any child, much less a child with developmental delays :-) I think I'd keep helping her like you are doing..... she'll get better as she gets older, and lots of typical kids still need/like help with this at this age. I think I'd get her clean, then have her give a try to so that she practices the motions, without having so much chance of making a mess.
