Just to let you know that I have decided to extend Autism2007 - the Awares

international online autism conference - for at least another week, until

December 7, 2007, and I will try and persuade as many of the authors as

possible to stay on to respond to questions next week.

Entry is open to all and this year's line-up of speakers features many of

the world's greatest living autism authorities. All of them will be

available to answer your questions.

Please bear in mind that you have to register at www.autism2007.org to be

able to read the full papers, as well as to take part in the discussions. If

anyone has had problems accessing the conference, could they please let me

know at adam@...

Last year's event was a resounding success - Professor Simon Baron-Cohen

called it " the best online autism conference on the planet. " Over 10,000

delegates joined in the discussions and put questions to the more than 60

experts taking part.

The line-up of experts who agreed to participate in this year's conference

is unprecedented. You will have the unique opportunity to put your questions

to all of them from November 26. The participants include Dr Lorna Wing,

Professor Rita Jordan, Professor Simon Baron-Cohen, Dr Folstein, Dr

Mesibov, Dr Darold Treffert, Professor Fizgerald, Dr Olga

Bogdashina - as well as some of the most prominent and articulate

individuals with autism, among them Donna and Lawson.

This unique conference is organised by Autism Cymru, Wales' National Charity

for Autism, and is kindly part-sponsored by Autism Speaks. Feel free to

contact me for more information on adam@...

Best wishes,

Adam Feinstein

Dear Adam,

Those who attend should bring along a copy of Nataf et al's study:

Laboratoire Philippe Auguste, Paris, France.

To address a possible environmental contribution to autism, we carried out a

retrospective study on urinary porphyrin levels, a biomarker of

environmental toxicity, in 269 children with neurodevelopmental and related

disorders referred to a Paris clinic (2002-2004), including 106 with

autistic disorder. Urinary porphyrin levels determined by high-performance

liquid chromatography were compared between diagnostic groups including

internal and external control groups. Coproporphyrin levels were elevated in

children with autistic disorder relative to control groups. Elevation was

maintained on normalization for age or to a control heme pathway metabolite

(uroporphyrin) in the same samples. The elevation was significant (P < 0.001).

Porphyrin levels were unchanged in Asperger's disorder, distinguishing it

from autistic disorder. The atypical molecule precoproporphyrin, a specific

indicator of heavy metal toxicity, was also elevated in autistic disorder (P

< 0.001) but not significantly in Asperger's. A subgroup with autistic

disorder was treated with oral dimercaptosuccinic acid (DMSA) with a view to

heavy metal removal. Following DMSA there was a significant (P = 0.002) drop

in urinary porphyrin excretion. These data implicate environmental toxicity

in childhood autistic disorder.
