Guest guest
Hi Norma, thank you so very much for this idea. I tried using the paste made with cinnamon and water but they went around it. I never thought of putting it around the containers. Guest guest
You may want to try a small ring of cinnamon around your brewing container. Works for me, and won't offend the sensitivity of our hard-working scobies. Norma Pirie Thank you so much for your reply Helen and your ideas. Unfortunately White Vinegar does not work for these critters. They are the small black ones but they seem to take a bath in it hahaha. I am not sure about sprinkling Boric Acid around my KT brew. There aren't many of them, scouts I think, but it is worrisome to me. " May the Great and Wise Wolf guide your path " Myrna
Guest guest
Wiping the surface with strong white vinegar will help and sprinkling a little boricacid where they roam will also help.Just be careful with the boric acid and make certain that it does not get around food. The white vinegar worked for me but there are many knids of ants. Mine were the small black ones but they were not near my KT. just around the back of the sink. Love, Helen in VA Ants Hi Robbie and all, Well, those pesky little ants sure do love to threaten my Kombucha. They left on their one accord last time. I went back to see if I could find the thread about natural Ant deterrents and could not find it. So far they have not been able to penetrate my brew but I am worried about them being near it. There seems to be only a few, maybe 6 to 10 at a time and I cannot find where they are coming from. No trail leading anywhere! Can someone please help me once more and this time, I will print it out for future use. Guest guest
Hi everyone - I'm new to the group but wanted to chime in on this discussion. This topic was discussed on the kefir board a while back, and a great suggestion that came out of it was using instant grits. Apparently works on roaches, too. Regular grits won't work (it will only feed them), but instant grits are apparently so dried out that it will dessicate the insects. Hope this helps! Guest guest
Thank you for the great ideas but the Cinnamon I put around my brewing jars has worked wonderful and it is non toxic, LOL The ants have left the premises. YEAH! " May the Great and Wise Wolf guide your path " Myrna
Guest guest
I would like to add my 2 cents' worth: If you happen to have a little bit of the poison (!!!) Aspartame, otherwise known as Equal or Nutrasweet, sprinkle this white powder that 'they' want you to believe is a non-caloric sweetener, around your brewing jar, and you will see a lot of dead ants. Roaches also die from it. But I am not sure you want to even touch this stuff, or have it be in the air... [And now that you know what it can do, please don't drink any diet soda and don't allow your kids to do so. It is a bad neurotixin] Personally, I have used the chalk that is also 'illegal' in this country, it comes from China, and you just draw a solid line around the bottom of the brewing jar, and no ant will ever climb through it. You can buy it at any Chinese market. Sara
Guest guest
Hi Here in South Australia it rarely gets below 8 degrees farenheit, and that is over night- it would prob get lower in winter, but not much lower. We do get snow in Australia- but in Canberra, some parts of NSW and some parts of . The rest of Australia is just too hot. Right now we are in summer- and so our temps are usually over 100 F here in South Australia- as we are very dry and hot. NSW tends to be muggy. So does Qld. We are getting allot of ants because it is so dry , I am presuming they are coming in for water. david shipp wrote: >Hi > >What is that smell they give up? Guest guest
Ants hate essential oil of peppermint. You can swipe some around your containers and they will stay away. I use it in my kitchen in the spring.

Guest guest
My mother always used to use cinnamon, but I've had better luck with chili powder. I couldn't believe how fast they stopped coming in after putting a little chili powder around the doorway. I expect there are different things for discouraging sugar eating ants vs. grease eating ants. One thing about the talc - perhaps if you buy 's Baby Cornstarch instead of talc, it would explain why it didn't work. Corn starch could possibly be seen as food. Another irrelevant factoid - ants eat flea babies, so if you have flea problems, it is good to have ants in your yard. --------------------------------- Get the toolbar and be alerted to new email wherever you're surfing.
