First of all, do you have a rheumatologist or is a GP treating you? If it's a GP, I would strongly urge you to find a rheumy and discuss enbrel. Eight years is a long time on MTX and the enbrel seems to have less side effects and is more effective. Calm down, get some information on your options, and find a rheumy you like and trust. Take things one step at a time and try not to stress out or get upset, because that will definately cause a flare. Good luck,
Guest guest
Tina: I worked as a cashier for several months and it was so hard with arthritis. I was miserable...my feet swelled and my ankles swelled and my hands were a mess. You need to rethink your job if you can because it will continue to cause you misery...its just the mature of that type of work. Hang in. Guest guest
Hi Tina, I don' know if this is your medical doctor, but if it is, I would suggest an evaluation by a rheumatolgist. PA does not necessarily affect one joint...it can be many. Also there is no rule of 3 injections in a lifetime of steroids in a joint. I myself, wouldn't opt for them off the bat but have found them to be useful when other methods provided no relief.
Guest guest
To all those out there getting( probably Cortizone..mine was) shots in the knees , hands and any where else...let me warn you.I just always trusted my Reumy and took those shots and yes they helped but, only temperarily. It does eat away bone...I have since had total knee replacement surgery on both my knees.( one in 86 and one in 87) I don't mean to scare any one but, I believe in telling the truth and not sugar coating it...I would not recommend cortiozone shots at all. I realize that at times that is all they can do to help but, now even though my shoulders are messed up from walking on a platform walker after my knee surgeries..I will never let my DR give me any more cortizone shots ...I'd rather deal with the pain untill I just can't take any more...then is when I will have my shoulders replaced. take care, ~ R~ --- toughcookie37 <twotriangles@...> wrote: > Help!!! Guest guest
Tina, I agree with , you must see a rheumatologist post haste. You definitely do not want steroids shot into your knee. They give short term relief and cause long term damage. I know its tough, but please try to stay as calm as you can, stressing will make you flare worse. When you see the rheumy, discuss how upset you are, not just where it hurts. Good luck and please see that doctor soon. Ari
Guest guest
Hi, First stress is a definite factor in our disease- PA. Winters always seem to be the worst. It sounds like you are having a flare. Remember you said " remission " . A remission is when a disease process subsides. It does not mean it's gone forever, unfortunately. Cortizone shots are a definite last resort and short term fix. NSAIDs (non steroidal anti-inflammatories) are much better if not complete relief (wish I could take them!). However, if you are completely immobil, you may decide you need one for now. Try to avoid shots directly to a joint. And don't get a shot more than once a year. Mostly, you're gonna have to start really taking care of yourself and your needs. Stretching, moist heat and ice, modified activity, talking to supportive friends. If you're having definite swelling but it hurts in the joint, try alternating heat and ice. This helps increase circulation. Work on range of motion stretching. Don't overdo anything. You may need to see if you can get short-term or long term disability if you're having a really bad flare. That does not mean you're disabled for life. It just means you need time to heal up. I'm sorry that you're having a flare after such a long remission. Really focus on being thankful for that remission! Wish you health, -Meghan > Help!!! I thought i had been in remisson after 8 years ofmethotrexate and plaquenil and just around xmas my right knee swelledup. i work as a cashier and have to stand all day . my dr. gave me aweek of methyl prednisone(a " 6 " pack) and then a week after that adepromedrol shot in my backside but i am still in pain with a swollenlocking up and givig way from under me knee. i have pa in my righthand and was under the assmption it was a diease that localized itself to one spot. am as wrong as i am now beginning to think I am? my dr wants to stick needlesin my knee with injections of a steriodthat he mumbled and then would not repeat the name of. Mychiropractor said DON " T LET HIM GIVE ME SHOTS IN MY KNEE it'sprobably cortisone and you can only have 3 shots of that in your lifeand that it eats away bone. HELP i feel all alone i am depressed and sad and can't even movearound to occupy my self like i used too. i am getting fat fast andmay lose my job because of this and my 9yr is bearing a way too heavyload for a child to bear-ME. can anyone advise me PLEASE?????????? Guest guest
--- I got a brochure from the Arthritis foundation and my rheumy confirmed it. You should NEVER get more than THREE injections into one joint. Make sure you are talking to the doctors and read as much info you can to educate yourself. Guest guest
The three injection rule covers a 12 month period. You should not have more than 3 steroid injections in the same joint during a 12 month period. This is a general rule with most physicians. However, it is easy to tell opinions are varied and a consensus doesn't exist.
