Hi - I was in an accident where I was thrown from a 3 wheeler (ATV's I think?) a

couple of months before my diagnosis. I neverthought of it being related to the

PA but maybe it is.

i haven't read this but i would be very interested in doing so. where did

you find the information? i have had a few trauma's in my life and would not

be surprised at this at all. i wonder if it's a commonality with many of us

here. i was in a tornado. i was badly injured when our house was destroyed

and i was in critical condition with a brain injury and not expected to live.

our first born son was killed and our second born was badly injured so i

lived with emotional trauma for years. Then shortly before i got PA, and

within a very short period of time, I had another huge emotional trauma

which brought all of the past up again and i'd had a really bad fall and was

physically injured. next think i knew, i was dealing with this beast. it

happened " overnight " in the midst off my emotional stuff. i don't know if

it's related, but it feels like a huge coincidence if not.

I fell on the sidewalk while walking with water shoes...after that it was

all downhill. In the beginning, it was just the top of my foot and ankle.

The ankle healed but then pain started several months later in my toes,

ankles and knee. It was finally diagnosed as PA this past spring. Trauma?

Yes, I think so.

Hi Leanda,

I can not give you any documented information about the

relationship between PA and trauma but I was in an accident that

totaled my car about 6 years ago. I was not severely hurt but my

back and neck were really messed up. I did go to a chiropractor.

He only made me hurt worse. I have had the Psoriasis for 23

years. I did have to go on an anti inflammatory about 10 years

ago. That was before the accident. So I did have signs of PA

before but the accident really changed things for me. I am sure

it progressed things along faster than they were going.

Sorry I am not much help but I can relate to your situation.

[ ] Caused by Trauma?

From: " LD Goss " <ldgoss@...>

Hi -

My husband, age 39, was diagnosed about 1 year ago with psoriatic

arthritis.

He was in an automobile accident about 6 months prior to this

diagnosis - he

was hit from behind (at about 45 mph) while at a stop light. He

was a

little sore afterwards but generally okay. Then his health

really began

deteriorating. It began in his feet and is now also affecting

his hands and

shoulder blades. We've read a few things about the onset of this

could be

triggered by a trauma. It just seems that after his accident

he's just gone

straight downhill. We've read a few articles that have talked

about it

possibly being triggered by an accident/trauma. I was wondering

if anyone

knew of any further information on this topic that would be

useful to us?

Thank you.

Leanda

Curious. I came off my bicycle (on an icy road) about 6 months before my PA

came on. Injuries were only minor and the docs reckon the stress I was under

then was more of a triggering factor (I was a teacher) but it does make you

wonder.

Cheers

Tony

I have no doubt to the possibility. & nbsp; I have read it also, and I can

tell you that my PA hit me overnight, as I was getting over a terrible

head cold which had stricken me to bed for over a week. & nbsp; I know that

illness can bring it on, as it is a break down in your immune system. & nbsp;

I assume that an accident such as the one your husband had could upset

the entire body system, including the immune system. & nbsp; Interesting.....I

like it when people share personal experiences like that. & nbsp; I find

it thought and discussion provoking!

Well..I did have a trauma of sorts...about 4 months prior to coming down with

the PA overnight..I had one of the worst body-wide cases of poison ivy anyone

here had ever seen...I mean it was BAD. I finally cleared it up after it ran

every inch of my body for 3 months, and soon after the PA struck.

Me too...went to bed fit as a fiddle 6 years ago...awoke with swelling and

pain in left foot...within 2 days moved to right foot...and within months to

ankles, knees, hands, wrists, shoulders, and finally hips. I have never had

a remission...just POOF...woke up one day and my life had changed forever.

You are not alone.

Trauma --

When I was 18 I was smacked by a car while riding my

bicycles through the center of town. I was a

traumatic accident, to say the least:

severe brain contusions, dislocated hip, multiple

abrasions and compound fractures, 3 weeks of coma,

etc.

First they thought I was going to die, next they

thought I might never walk again.

Guess what? It is over 20 years later and I am alive

(despite my recent post to the about.com arthritis BB)

and I walk just fine, thank you. Doctors at the time

-- who were wrong about the above two issues, mind

you,

suggested all sorts of evil things for my future.

Other than some (admittedly rather painful) osteo

arthritis in my right hip and some emotional trouble I

don't think the trauma of the accident had anything to

do w/ my PA. I brought this up w/ my RD and she

largely agrees.

I'm interested in this as well-- my PA seemed to come on about 6 months after I

left college in my hometown and moved to a new city and started a " real

job " --I've been curious whether there may have been a correlation there... i.e.

the stress of major life changes acting as a trigger in some way.... I think it

could have contributed alot...however, although this may have been the " trigger "

there had to be something there already (genetic?) for the trigger to " set off "

so to speak, and once the ball got rolling, it's another question to figure out

how to stop it or break the cycle. Something we are all looking for, I know.

In retrospect, it was clear that I had some symptoms of PA in the mid-1980's,

but none of my doctors knew what was wrong. One did suspect that I may

develop PA sometime. In the late 80's, I had three traumatic events which

lasted four years. 1) I changed jobs and suffered serious harassment for

the 4 years I was there; Simultaneously, 2) my step-father suffered through

lung cancer for two years and then died; 3) After his death, my own father

developed throat cancer, and died two years later - I took care of him in our

home.

I physically went downhill in a 'death spiral' during those four years, and

never recovered. In the early 90's, my new doctors right away were able to

diagnose PA and Fibromyalgia. I would have these illnesses anyway, but I am

positive that that four years of constant super stress pushed me over the

line.
