Hi Sue,

Yes, he can get SSI after 18. After 18 his parents income will not count for consideration, so he has a good chance to get it. When he get it SSI will pay a retroactive check if he got denied before, counting the day he got denied.

You will need to gother all information, school records, doctors diagnosis, etc.

Does he also have a health condition as astma?

It also a good idea to take him to see a psyquatrist and mention that you need help in getting SSI for him.

If you do not have the money ask for payment plan to pay the first visit.

It is a matter of fact that my friend' son got an emergency SSI when he went to see the psyquiatrist he told the psyquiatrist of his depression, the reason he smoke marihuana, his sadness when he did not make it to college...etc, etc, so he got diagnosed with biopolar desorder and other issues...

I would take him to see a psyquiatrist and ask him to help him to get SSI. My friend's son got it in three months.

Good luck, and if he take him let me know how things went...

The

( ) Can someone explain SSI to me?I recently contacted local attorney that specializes in helping clients getSSI. I had several questions about how they award it, who gets it, what ittakes to get it, can you work, etc. The nice lady on the phone asked if hehad been in spec ed, and he was for 12 years. And IQ, yes below their"benchmark" line, she was really fr iendly, said someone would call to setup appt. Yeah, I thought I'd get questions answered. No, they called twodays later to reject my case. WHAT CASE! She had next to no information onson, I gave her so specifics except above. I was NEVER told anydetermination would be made based on conversation with "receptionist." Sohow do I proceed? sue in TN
