Guest guest
Hi caroline, I had the arthritis from the age of 11 till 23 with no psoriasis and after I had my first child at 23 the psoriasis started. I am 25 now and until now the Dr.s were clueless to what it could be. They swore it had to be rehumatoid arthitis but all blood work came back normal. So yes it is very possible to have the arthritis first and then psoraiasis to come later or sometimes not even at all. I think the hormones from pregnancy triggered the psoriasis to finally come out of hiding. I hope that helps. Joy

Guest guest
The recent article Meghan referred us to http://www.healthtalk.com/rain/toc/psoriatic/definition/06.html stated that 15% of PA patients experience arthritis before developing psoriasis. In our (AS) case, many people with the spinal involvement never seem to have alimentary tract problems, yet these are at the root of AS and certainly existed but were not noticed, as such. In the case of psoriasis, it would be lucky to not have the skin lesions along with the joint pain, but it is a hereditary condition and almost no doubt from your father's genetic contribution. I had both psoriasis without knowing it (lesions were singular and infrequent), and IBD, too and yet first diagnosed with AS due to S-I pain. One of our group, Carol Sinclair ( " The IBS Starch--Free Diet " ) at first only had symptoms of IBS--so severe that when she figured it out and fixed it, she never developed any sign of AS aside from the occasional aches pains. Good luck to you,
Guest guest
Hi Caroline Yes I have had PA for some 7 years now but have never developed P. My Dad had P but no PA and my daughter has P but no PA ...very strange. My rheumy told me when I was first diagnosed that I had about a 50% chance of developing P but touch wood I am clear so far. As a keen genealogist I decided to set up a health family tree and came up with so many auto immune diseases all on one side of the family and carrying on to the young ones of today. The first ancestor I picked up died in 1888 of 'rheumatism' he had been invalided out of the British Army at the age of 43 with chronic rheumatism he was in his late 80's when he died.. imagine having arthritis for that many years with NO treatment!! Doesn't bear thinking about. Regards Gaye
Guest guest
Hi. My name is and I got Psoriatic arthritis first!! In fact I was watching the olympics (I am in U.S.) in February of 1996 and was unable to get up from pain. I went to the doctor and was diagnosed about 3 months later. Then my Psoriasis came into being. From what I know of it you don't have to have Psoriasis involvement. My Cousin shows no outward signs of Psoriasis yet is more severe in that department then I (until recently we are about the same). Hope this helps. Guest guest
thank you all for your responses - this group is very helpful. it's nice to know that you are not alone. after having these symptoms for so many years and getting no answers, i was starting to feel a little that i was crazy! i guess now i have to wait for the rheumatologist appointment. i'll let you know - as i am bound to have some questions if it does indeed turn out to be PA. -caroline
Guest guest
Hi Caroline, It took over a year for me to get a diagnosis mainly because I was 22 at the time (too young to have arthritis) and I didn't have any psoriasis. I had one joint on my pinky finger (the one closest to the nail) that was very red, very swollen and very painful. The Dr.s thought I had broken it but I knew that I didn't hurt it. I just woke up one day and it was there. They even went so far as to say that it could be a reaction to different climate, different food (I had moved to Portugal with my husband). I also had some yellowing in my fingernails but the Dr.s thought it was nail fungus and treated it with lamisil. Well I went through the 3 months of treatment for my nails and they weren't getting any better. My finger was only getting worse. I was in excruciating pain and they didn't know what to do. By then it had spread to my middle finger. My husband and I decided to return to the states to have it looked at. 8 months later when we made it back to the states I saw a dr. in a free hospital (I didn't have insurance for the first 8 months when we returned. He thought there was something wrong with the capsule??? He put me on NSAIDS and sent me to physical therapy for my finger. I had many doubts. He even wanted me to wrap it to immobilize it (big no no w/ arthritis). When I finally got insurance I saw a rheumatologist and they flat out said that it was psoriatic arthritis. By then the arthritis spread to my toes and all my fingers. My fingernails cleared up with Enbrel and I don't have any psoriasis at all. The arthritis is pretty much in control with the Enbrel (for the most part). I pray to God that I never get it on my body. It is hard enough dealing with arthritis, I really feel for the people who have to suffer from the psoriasis too. Oh by the way, no one in my family has psoriasis or psoriatic arthritis (not even grandparents or great grandparents). Go figure. >>> carchambault@... 03/06/02 07:25PM >>> hello - i'm new to this group. i'm a 30 year old female who is in the process of being diagnosed for a long history of joint pain and inflammation. my doctor is pretty sure that it is psoriatic arthritis - we are awaiting a rheumatologist appointment to finalize diagnosis. the thing is - i don't have psoriasis. my father has it and it runs on his side of the family. does anyone out there have this kind of history - psoriatic arthritis pre-psoriasis? is this indeed possible? any advice is great - caroline
