Hi Nanc,

I have not tried the tanning beds as of yet but I have been thinking about it. I am being weaned off the prednisone right now. Thanks to the Enbrel waiting list, I am not getting that now either. My rheumy just upped my MTX to 12.5 injectable. I am also on Vioxx. We are going to wait this month while I get used to the 12.5 dose and then we will be starting the Remicade.

I sure hope that helps! He drained my knee this last time and gave me an injection of celestone. I am hoping that he will give the other knee a shot next visit. He takes turns with them and I get to pick the sorest one.

Take care,

D in MN

I've not been on this list long but have not seen anyone write about

using sun beds for relief from the p..........i've used the beds for

several years, usually in the spring months to clear up as much as i can

from the cold winter months here in the northeast.

Hi,

I'm just wondering what the difference is between these tanning beds and the

treatment people get at the tanning salons that use UV lights. Having just

finished a gruesome study of skin disorders in a med terminology course I'm

taking, I would prefer to have the p over 100% of my body to taking a risk

with UV lights.

Hopefully you are referring to something else.

,

Please do some research on tanning beds. The last time I looked into

that topic, there was some indication that they can cause problems for

you later.

Patty,

Anything in excess can do harm. Psoriasis has always been known

to do better w/sun rays to help clear scales.........any skin doctor will

tell you to stay out of the sun but in moderation, exposure to sun rays

can be very helpful.

I only do the rays at the time of the year that my scales are really

bad........my ex mother in law used to give me fits about tanning but would

she rather watch me bleed all the time at my elbows, knees, base of spine

and watch my scalp ooze........it helped keep me somewhat underr control

during those few months between the cold winter and summer.

this year i have been much better but then i've been on sterioids since

oct so should be

I agree with . I have used tanning beds only when necessary. When I lived in Colorado I used them throughout the winter to keep my psoriasis under control. Since I have been living near Houston I have not needed to use one until January of this year. I had a breakout that bothered me so went then and it is fairly controllable now. I try and get some sun when I can, but try to be careful also. I am fully aware of the hazards of too much sun as my father has skin cancer from all his years in it.

Maybe I am ignorant, but I would rather get some sun or rays to keep it all controllable than go around covered in spots. I am an Adapted P.E. teacher and wear shorts a lot of the time so don't want to gross anyone out either.

Have to offer a word here: I doubt that I'm the only one who has also

developed an allergy to sun as a result of the P/PA. During my worst

outbreak I thought the sun would help, since it always had seemed to, and

broke out in the ugliest all over rash of my life everywhere the sun touched

me. Ears, face, scalp, arms and legs -- the night it took off I thought I

could see it spreading, so I used a magic marker and drew a line at the

edge. Twenty minutes later it had spread 2 " past my line.

I was lucky and found a dermatologist for the first time in my life who

recognized the unspecified rash for what it was: psoriasis, arthritis

compounding, and who treated me with erythromyacin, elocon, and a

moisturizing concoction of his own. I did spend the rest of that year living

like Dracula: long sleeves, slacks and sun hats (of course this was in

August in the central valley of CA, where 95-105 is the daytime norm) and

I've used every sunblock known to man since then.

I'm sure not suggesting that anyone else or everyone has this bizarre

reaction, but it's worth keeping in mind, I think, before thinking about

tanning beds.
