But I wouldn't worry about it too much - I'm sure it's much less " toxic " to the system than some of other drugs (MTX, prednisone, etc.) - I'd ask your doctor though if you are concerned. Guest guest
Hi Beverley ~ I'm not the same Judy but ALEVE is an over-the-counter (OTC) pain reliever. It's the nonprescription strength of Naprosyn. Here's their web site if you want more info: www.aleve.com. Naprosyn has worked well for me in the past but has also caused some stomach distress so I don't take it regularly anymore. Enjoy, Another Judy ) beverley9 wrote: Hi Judy It is Beverley from Australia how are you. Guest guest
Hi Beverley, I'm responding to this as well because I'm in Canada and you might have the same situation in Australia as we do here. Aleve is sold over the counter in the US as an anti-inflammatory/pain reliever (more like an improved aspirin). I've used it for fibromyalgia and unfortunately it didn't help me. Here in Canada we can get it only by prescription and it goes by the name 'Naproxen'. If you mention that to your pharmacist, you will probably be given all the official information you need. ....what is Aleve I have never heard about it is it like vioxx or some thing or is it a antidepressant.... Guest guest
Aleve is an antiinflamatory/pain reliever that, for me, works quite well on the P/A. I used to take Piroxicam periodically when the situation made it necessary. What I didn't like about it was the fact that it had to be taken daily, whether I hurt or not to be effective when needed. It also should be monitored due to the potential for liver damage. After being on it for about 9 mos I checked with a P.A. about finding something better suited to my habits and needs. I was given samples of an Rx version of Aleve, equivelent to about 3 of the OTC tabs. The P.A. chose that because of the less likelyhood of liver damage from long term usage. They worked quite well with the added bonus that I only take them when I hurt enough to need them, when I'm working, skiing, or engaged in any other strenuous activities. I don't think twice about taking 3 tabs 2 X a day only when needed. <><>SV -- In @y..., judy malone <judy_malone@y...> wrote: > Hi does anyone know if there are any long term side > effects of taking Aleve? THAT MEANS DEPENDING ON YOUR DAILY DOSAGE YOU SHOULD HAVE LIVER FUNCTION TESTS AS WELL AS KIDNEY(NOT SURE HOW THEY CHECK THAT) BECAUSE IT COULD HAVE A NEGATIVE EFFECT IF YOU TAKE TOO MUCH FOR TOO LONG WITHOUT TESTING. IT WOULD BE YOUR DOCTORS CALL AS TO HOW OFTEN YOU SHOULD BE TESTED. IF YOU HAVE ANY HISTORY OF KIDNEY OR LIVER PROBLEMS IN YOUR FAMILY, IT IS EXTREMELY IMPORTANT THAT YOU LET YOUR DOC KNOW. DON'T MEAN TO SCARE YOU BUT I WOULD HATE TO SEE ANYTHING HAPPEN TO ANYBODY BECAUSE THEY WEREN'T MADE AWARE OF THE SIDE EFFECTS BY THEIR DOCTOR. BEST OF LUCK!! Guest guest
Judy There is another concern with NSAIDS like Aleve that you should khow about. In some people they can also be the cause for bleeding ulcers or Gastro symptons. If you develop a bleeding ulcer you would likely have blood in your stool at some time but not always. In severe cases people have literally died of blood loss in the stomach. I believe if you take as directed and avoid aspirin-like meds most people are fine. You also should NEVER take on an empty stomach as this may increase your chance of bleeding. If you are overly concerned it would be worth talking to your Dr, about the risk. There are new cox-2 inhibiter NSAIDS like Celebrex and Vioxx that can lessen the risks. Have a Happy Day!!Dena > In a message dated 05/08/2001 4:30:04 AM Eastern Daylight Time, > judy_malone@y... writes: > > << Hi does anyone know if there are any long term side > effects of taking Aleve? Guest guest
Thought I'd double check and you're right that ALEVE is a NSAID. Here's what I found on their web site from a chat with 'experts': >>DorisO: what are NSAIDs? <<The Experts: NSAIDs stands for non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. They include Aleve, Bayer Aspirin, Advil, Nuprin, Motrin & Orudis KT. They have been used by doctors to treat pain and fever, and in higher doses to treat inflammation such as arthritis. However, they are not steroids, like cortisone, and do not have steroid side effects. Acetaminophen products (Tylenol) are not NSAIDs and are not used to reduce inflammation. Thank you for your question. I wasn't sure since what I usually have heard it toughted for is the pain relief benefits. Hope things work out with your angina and your pacemaker. I am confused, though. Is the actually pacemaker? And who's overseas? Guest guest
Aleve is 'naproxen sodium'. From my experience it is not the same as Ibuprofen. Way back when, my P/A was being treated as carpal-tunnel and the Ibuprofen, even in massive doses, was not giving any relief. Also, ice packs aggrevated the pain and heat made it feel better. I was at a remote location in the Aleutians being treated by a P.A. (physician's assistant), no doctors out there. He noted that heat was prefered and that I had P and deduced that the problem was P/A. The first time any health professional recognized that my joint pains of many years were P/A related. I was put onto piroxicam. Worked like a wonder. As I noted in a prior post I have changed from piroxicam to Aleve because of the general nature of the medications, Aleve being more innocuous and not needing to be taken on a regimen. The Aleve works as well as the piroxicam in reducing the inflamation. So, for me, Aleve works and Ibuprofen doesn't. As far as I'm concerned, They are not the same or even similar. Take care. <><>SV > In a message dated 5/8/01 4:04:17 PM Pacific Daylight Time, TADEL630@a... > writes: > > > > << Hi does anyone know if there are any long term side > > effects of taking Aleve?
