For once my PA isn't too bad. But last night I rolled over in bed and I

got attacked by sciatica - something I haven't had for about four years

now. This is really bad. I can't walk, I can't sit, I can't lie down.

everything makes it worse. I don't see any point in going to my doctor

because all I get told is rest and painkillers. There has to be

something more I can do besides that. Does anyone know a way to live

with this? Last time I had it for several months. I have work and

school to go to and no time for this. If anyone has any ideas please

respond.

- Unfortunately since it sounds like your sciatic nerve is being

pinched, there really isn't much to do besides give it time. Pinched nerves

are tough to treat - well, there isn't really a treatment for them. Maybe

asking your doctor for a muscle relaxant like flexeril as well as pain

killers would make you more comfortable.

Good luck - hope you feel better soon!

sorry to hear about your siciatica I had this several years ago and

I was taught by a physo to do exercises gently

like laying in bed flat and pretending to ride a bike peddle that is and

then ten lift up as high as you can go a rest inbetween each leg. I laughed

at this but I was desperate and they said hospital if it did not improve as

I was on so much pain stuff.

Well it was amazing the improvement and in a few days I could walk and not

scream. You may like to try and another thing

a Professor in Rhumatology told me take 2 panamax 4times a day and don't

wait for pain to come I hope this may be some help

God Bless

In re: to your sciatic nerve pain which I also had a few months ago. After

three days & nights I called my reg. MD He suggested pain meds and a heating

pad. I took some flexeril & two long acting tylenol, laid flat down on the

bed with the heating pad under my lower back & put my legs up with my knees

bent at right angles, on four or five pillows and slept for five or six

hours. I felt a lot better and then went for physical therapy for about 6

weeks. the PT worked on the muscles in my back. However when I asked my

orthopedist and my neuro- surgeon they both said to go to the emergency room

for an injection to relieve the spasms. Peggy B. (Hope you get some relief

from your pain)

--- I got this bad during pregnancy, and occasionally since. My

,

I had more success with accupuncture, but it took several visits. The

relief lasted a long time, provided I did my exercises. Pain medication

didn't help me.

From one who knows.....find a good chiropractor. If that doesn't work, ask

your doc about the set of epidurals. After the third shot, I get complete

relief. And this one has lasted over a year.

Best of luck.....

...I have had a lower back disability for 15 years. I never know when it

is going to happen. Here's what works for me. It even got me home from Bora

Bora once. Ice every hour for 10 to 20 minutes for 4 to 6 hours the first 2

days followed by heat the next few days. An electric heating pad and /or a spa

works great. As for medications, my old friends Valium and Ibuprofen. Valium

is a much better muscle relaxer than Flexoril and has fewer weird psychological

side effects. It will also make you rest. The Ibuprofen is anti-inflammatory

but you have to take a large dose like 600 mgs every 4 to 6 hours. Stay away

from pain killers like Codine-Tylenol because they mask the injury and you can

make it worse. After that do the standard physical therapy exercises like the

Cobra where you lay on your belly and push your shoulders up with your arms.

Also lay on your back and press the small of your back to the floor. There are

a bunch more. If you call your doctor they usually have a standard printed

sheet diagraming them all. The exercises really help in the long term. In my

experience Chiropractors always aggravated my injury, especially in the acute

phase. I also just recommended the same drugs for airline travel.
