My 6 year old son has MAJOR problems with constipation. He truly holds poop for

days and days and days! When he finally does go it clogs the toilet because of

the size. Yesterday he threw up because of the pain in passing it. I have taken

him to a gastro. doctor that said to give him Miralax. When I do he has problems

with the poop coming out in small quantities in his underwear. This causes him

to spend a great deal of time in the bathroom cleaning himself. He changes his

underwear all day! This also creates stress for him because he is a compulsive

hand washer and he is constantly washing his hands because of this. Then, his

hands crack from the dryness. I feel so bad for him and don't know what to do.

Has anyone dealt with this problem and if you have what did you do? My son is

miserable.

Ok... another question. My 3 year old cries about back pain in his car seat. I

have taken him to the doctor and he has examined him and says there is nothing

physically wrong and it is just attention getting behavior. I KNOW it is not. He

SCREAMS about the pain and tears are pouring down his face. His nose is running

and his face is red. We have tried different car seats, stacking boxes under his

feet for support and small pillows behind his back. Nothing works. He too fights

constipation. At times I figured the back pain was related to this but, even

after having a bowel movement he will still cry about back pain when he has been

in his car seat for more than 15 or 20 minutes. Could this be a weak core?

Has anyone else had this problem? Is this hypotonia? I'm not even sure what that

word means? Someone mentioned it to me related to this problem. Anyway, ANY

advice would be appreciated.

Hi

My just-turned-8 yr old Aspie has similar issues. He is no

longer constipated because I force him to sit on the toilet everyday at the

same time and go, but if I let it go AT ALL, he just won’t go. He claims he can’t

feel it at all. Every once in a while when a day gets missed (like being with

Grandma) he’ll be in pain the next day and it’s that much harder for him to go.

Sometimes we’ll fight for an hour before he’ll finally just do it—he of course

is yelling that he doesn’t have to go—there’s nothing there, and then he

literally lays a snake in the toilet. (it’s huge) I’m NOT trying to be gross,

but it is my life!! He has had a few accidents at school as well. (this would

be the little bits in the underwear like you described)

I found that routine—like with everything else—tends to work the

best. Best of luck to you!

Hi ,

We've been there. What has really helped my son is acidophilous tablets. This is the same probiotic that is in Activia yogurt. (which will not eat). From what I undestand, AS kids are defecient in the good bacteria that helps with digestion. Now, he goes poop at least every other day, and there is a decrease in size. Also, if he eats a lot of gluten, there is a company called Houston Nutracuticals that makes enzymes to ease digestion. They do have a web site. I've never had a problem with sitting in the car seat. You may want to get a second opinion from a different doctor.

Both my Aspie boys, 16 and 5, hold it in. My oldest now takes a prescription Miralax type powder every night to keep him going. We battled and battled from the age of 5 on. My youngest is doing the same. He always denies that he has to go when I know he does and he ends up having those dried bits in his underwear that drive me CRAZY !! I end up finding bits of poop on the floor sometimes and then he knows hes in trouble. If I lose track of when he has last gone then he will go for days. I then threaten the kids laxative and then he typically goes. I am going to try to get him to sit on the toilet every day at the same time ( which was just suggested to us by his doc) but I have little to no hope that it will work. I know he will just go into meltdown mode, but we'll see!

My 13 year old son has had problems throughout the years. I make sure he gets lots of fiber, and give him mineral oil (mixed in ice cream or yogurt) to help the BM's out easier. Good luck!Sent from my iPhoneOn Apr 6, 2010, at 9:21 PM, "" <jnbass97@...> wrote:

try milk of magnesia. It works faster than miralax without the " residual "

effects. You can buy it at any of the pharmacies over the counter, it's not as

expensive and it comes in a cherry flavor too.

My daughter when she was younger hated the car seat too. I could

get her into the seat in the morning when she was still in

a good mood and then I would go to a park, or zoo or nature

center till it was time to go to the car for her lunch and

bottle and nap time. Once she feel asleep I could

get her back home. It really didn't improve until

she gotten older and started watching videos on a player

we got. Now she has a portable DVD to distract her on car rides.

My daughter would sit fine in a swing even if it had straps

since she liked the swinging motion.

Our Occupational Therapist tried to help me with this issue

she had suggested making the back of the car darker,

having lots of pillows to grap onto, playing very slow

calming music ...none of this made a difference until

we got the VHS player set up.

Epsom Salt baths can really help with constipation.  Start with 1/4 cup and work your way up each bath to 2 cups.  Make sure it's as warm as they can stand it, deep as is safe, and that they sit in it for at least 20 minutes.  It has magnesium in it which is what helps the constipation.  It's really cheap so it's an easy thing to try.
