Guest guest
Hi, are there any books that kids on the spectrum can read to help them understand what behaviors attract others? My son had decided he wants a girlfriend, but has no clue how to get one. I can talk to him, but reading has always seemed to be the way he has learned. Thanks,
Guest guest
How old is your son? Mine has just turned 7 and seems to get by just treating them like friends, I took him to a school disco and there was a queue of girls asking him to dance, he wouldn't dance with any of them, he seemed to think it was more fun to bop them on the head with a glow stick, and they didn't seem to mind! You need to find something age appropriate. From: laura6307 <laura6307@...>Subject: ( ) Any books on dating etiquette..... Guest guest
He's nearly 12. His younger brother now has a 'girlfriend' (and trust me I am treating this very lightly since the kids know my stance that they will be much older before they are allowed to have privacy). I think it is great that he is noticing that many of the other kids his age are forming bonds based on 'like' in only that - he is noticing, LOL. He wants the end-product, but I'm not sure he understands the steps involved, or what he would do once he had a girlfriend. His younger brother is much more mature in this arena than he is. I so agree on a book that is designed for his age. I know there is a book out there talking about Aspergers and teens - maybe I need to search for it and see if it has a chapter on this. > > > From: laura6307 <laura6307@...> > Subject: ( ) Any books on dating etiquette..... > > Date: Wednesday, 17 March, 2010, 13:46 > > > Â > > > > Hi, are there any books that kids on the spectrum can read to help them understand what behaviors attract others? Guest guest
Does your son have a cell phone? That is an important tool in todays kids arsenal not only for social acceptance but also for communications. Your child is going to learn through trial and error probably more than any other method. I have sat down with my son and coach him on a few things but he is so independent, I think it goes in one ear and out the other. My theory is that asperger kids are already at a disdvantage in forming social relationships. So I try not to further disadvantage my son by not equipping him with a cellphone and a texting package. Not all kids are ready for a phone and some parents look at this as a risk and a loss of control. So everyone will probably have an opinion here. But I think you can monitor your child and take a bit of risk with the benefit of helping out a child in an area where they are historically and characteristically challenged in. Guest guest
Not yet. It will be part of his 12th birthday celebration next month. We DO allow him to email and chat (via gmail) with friends. I can't agree with you more on the importance of this tool. Thanks! > > > > > > > > > From: laura6307 <laura6307@> > > > Subject: ( ) Any books on dating etiquette..... > > > > > > Date: Wednesday, 17 March, 2010, 13:46 > > > > > > > > > Â > > > > > > > > > > > > Hi, are there any books that kids on the spectrum can read to help them understand what behaviors attract others?
