I have a 9 year old.I believe it is time to tell him how very special he is. I

am looking for advice on how I should tell him, any experienced parent out

there, or if there is some literature on subject to best tell him. I would

appreciate any and all help.

Thank You, Sandy (this is my first email

You might check out the book called All CAts have Aspergers. It's a good

analogy to explain how different people are wire differently, just like cats are

wire differently from dogs, say...

I am also new (about 2 weeks) to Asp. and my son. I think he knows he's special, but I haven't told him yet about the Asp. I don't think I will. He's already dealing with a lot of hyperactivity due to ADHD. He knows he has that and it helps him take his Ritalin without hassle. Let me know what you decide to do. That is my own personal decision. Good Luck. Keep writing the group there is so much good info out there. I am learning so much from others with more knowledge than me.

Hello I'm also new to the group, my son who is 9 has been asking questions about

the things I do with him so I have been talking to him about having AS.

Some ideas I have used:

1.This book is great we read it together and he said to me " that's what I do " so

he recognizes himself which helps him understand. A Special book about me by

Josie SanTomauro.

2. Talk about how many people are different/good at different things/find some

things hard or easier - just pointing out that lots of people have differences

for many reasons not just AS.

3. Find some people around who have Aspergers and point it out to them they

don't feel so alone or different Harry always cracks a smile when he realizes he

is not so different after all (I do use the word special) this was easy for us

as my chiropractor who Harry has been to with me has it so I told Harry this, we

were also playing at the beach the other day and two little boys joined in play

and I then found out they both have AS when we talked about them later that

night and I told him he said " so there are people like me everywhere "

4. Then I just go through some of his traits and tell him why they are different

to me or you.

So far so good his biggest struggle is a GF/CF diet.

I agree. It's direct and to the point and adoreable!!! Even my NON-AS kids will read it and say, "Hey....that's me!!!!".

And when the broken hearted people living in the world agree, there will be an answer, let it be. For though they may be parted there is still a chance that they will see, there will be an answer. let it be.
