Guest guest
I homeschool my Aspie son, but he is only 6 so I am not sure any of my suggestion will be helpful. He is gifted in math and science so we kinda just buy him workbooks at Sams club and let him go at his own pace. Science and Social studies we just read lots and lots of books at this point. I am assuming at age 12 you will probably want a set curriculum. Maybe some people on here with older children will be able to make more suggestions. I do know that with an aspie you need to be flexible and willing to adapt the curriculum to meet their individual needs. > > Does anyone homeschool their Asperger child? Guest guest
We do, but mine is only 5. There is a group called HomeschoolingAspies, and I can recommend at least one good book about homeschooling special needs children, if you are interested. > > Does anyone homeschool their Asperger child? Guest guest
Hi: I homeschool my 14 y.o. daughter. For the last couple of years, she's attended a hybrid school for homeschoolers where the teacher teaches 2-3 days a week and the other days you do work at home with Mom. You might want to see if there's anything like this in your area. It worked really well for a while but this year things have kind of fallen apart with the teachers and the other kids. The good news is the school is accredited so through their independent study program she'll get a transcript as if she were attending a regular private school. Right now we're doing an online French class through Power Speak. I highly recommend this program. She's still taking Literature at the school. We've started doing Ancient History at home as well as Science. We're also reading the top 100 books of all time-1 book a week. She's teaching herself the Japanese alphabet also. We're struggling through Math because that's her weak spot and mine! I also rent at least 1 Imax movie a week through Netflix to supplement Science as well as watching Discovery channel specials such as " King Tut " . The main goal I have is for her to LEARN. I am not a fan of workbooks and busy work just so I'll feel like I'm doing something with her. Memorizing facts to pass a test then forgetting them the next week is not learning. In the beginning I felt like I needed to do things the same way they did in public school. I found myself doing the very things I hated about that (busy work, workbooks, etc.). It takes a while to get into a groove you'll feel comfortable with. Let me know if I can help! a > > Does anyone homeschool their Asperger child? Guest guest
Oh dear good luck with this one. I had thought of it with my son who is 9 but I keep having panic attacks - it takes me hours of coercing to get him to do his homework so I can't see it working in my case. Guest guest
With our 9yo son we also spent a couple of school yrs struggling mightily with homework. when we started asking him what time he wants to do his homework (4pm or 5pm 6pm) he made that decision and it got much easier. geo - ( ) Re: Homeschool questions Received: Sunday, 28 February, 2010, 2:56 AM  We do, but mine is only 5. Guest guest
Thank you for saying that! When you homeschool you always question if what you're doing is " good enough " or the right way. I hope to be on the right track now. a > > > > Does anyone homeschool their Asperger child? My grandaughter is 12 and mom is considering homeschool for her. Guest guest
I'm really late with this, but here are my thoughts.... 1. There is an adjustment period of a few months when switching from PS to homeschooling. They have to get used to you teaching them, and you have to figure out what works for them. Don't worry if their progress isn't quick enough those first few weeks. Try to make it fun if you can. Keep in mind that public school kids aren't going at a fast pace. 2. Generally speaking if a curriculum isn't working, it's probably best to move on to something that does. There's a lot of curricula that is highly regarded which I found to be useless for my family, but it may be good for yours (and vice verse). 3. If you don't have 4-5 children, socialization is something that needs to be worked on, but it isn't as tough as public school proponents make it out to be. Many places that offer extracurricular activities to public school children will offer classes to homeschoolers and the HS classes tend to be better (lower number of kids with the owners or best instructors teaching). I've also thought that simply using after school daycare would be a way to meet this need. Finally, check out local homeschooling organizations and consider COOPs. In my area there are some large christian COOPs that offer a lot of classes. Homeschooling families tend to be more accepting of kids who are different (many are HSing for the same reason), and generally speaking the kids are well behaved. 4. Materials... A lot of parents like to order the Rainbow Resource center catalog which is 1300 pages. http://www.rainbowresource.com/index.php I'm partial to getting stuff off ebay, http://www.fes.follett.com/, or at large state conventions. Some popular curricula includes.... a. Singapore math (less structured) b. Saxon Math (more structured) c. Well Trained Mind Series (English/History) d. Abeka (common Christian curriculum in private schools) e. Handwriting without Tears Personally, the only one of the above that I liked was Singapore math. Get some sort of blackboard or whiteboard to write on, and have a desk/chair that is the right size for them. - > > Does anyone homeschool their Asperger child? Guest guest
I realize that advocating for AS kids is so difficult so many people homeschool to get their AS kids out of horrible school settings. No child should be tramatized by school. Kids can be so cruel too. I would not want to see your grandchild tramatized in school. We took another path and that was getting experts to advocate and get our daughter into a special needs school. My daughter will need so much help getting thru high school and getting some type of vocational training. Since my daughter is an only child and complains how lonely she is I had no idea how I would be able to have her be around peers. My daughter is also an avoidant and dependent child and I thought for sure homeschooling would make her so much more dependent on me. I wish you success, Pam > > Does anyone homeschool their Asperger child? My grandaughter is 12 and mom is considering homeschool for her.
