Geee , the needs of each AS child varies SO much, both by diagnosis and how it's manifested and the childs needs direct the type of therapies used. Are you looking for strategies for your son particularly ? Or are you looking for written scientific data regarding the characteristics trained neuropsychologists look for in diagnosing children who have been referred ?

I'm going to file a due process appeal, and I'd like to support my claims about my son's needs with some hard data. So I'm looking for any research on what therapies work, what approaches work (ABA, OT), and how much therapy these kids need.-------------------------------------

I understand his needs, and the county determined that he has Aspergers (in

addition to being VI and needing 4 sets of tubes due to fluid in his ears), so

he now has an IEP (again). But I'd like some research data supporting the fact

that these kids in general need a lot of therapy and support, and I was

wondering if there was a good location online that lists it. Their specific

needs differ, but most (if not all) kids with Aspergers need a significant

amount of therapy as early as possible. My county offered my son 1 hour of

direct OT a month and effectively no therapy to address his behavior issues, so

I'm making the case that they have been negligent.

The needs differ, but generally these kids need a significant amount of therapy

which should be provided as early as possible, and my understanding is that the

research is fairly consistent in this matter.

You are correct about the desire to get the AS dx early so social skills and behavior strategies can be emphasized. Have you contacted the Disibility Law Center ? They may be able to guide you. Some of my best information came from calling a Case Woker in a different County. They were able to tell me what to expect for services.

Also, if your trying to build a case for neglect by the County, based upon medical diagnosis, you'll probably need to comb through their web site VERY thuroughaly. I have had a few instances of that recently, and this County is saying, "Ours is a Voluntary Service and the programs available within the community vary depending upon each individuals needs and IF those needs are made known to the Case Worker through documented requests for those services." My complaint is that I don't KNOW what those services are so I can ask for them, util the Case worker INFORMS me... and it sounds like you've run into the same situation. Its a lot of double-speak, and they refuse to be accountable for their negligence.

What State are you in? I Do have a list of Information Centers and Resource Centers across the country... Also, I recommend you call the Alliance National Parent Technical Assistance Center (The Alliance) 888-248-0822 ... alliance@...

That might be a good place to start... Let me know if I can help in any other way. Kate

I will probably be going to a due process hearing, and using the information as

additional support making the case that the county has failed to educate and

provide adequate services for my son and that they need to pay for private

schooling/services.

I'm in Virginia. The state doesn't see itself as a regulator from what I've

seen, and aside from early intervention which ends around the time they start

school, there are no case workers provided to parents. I'm contacting a good

lawyer in the area, and if that doesn't work, I'll probably contact some of the

national advocacy groups before progressing with the due process stuff.

Wasn't someone going to a Yale program on behavior needs? Also,

you could try contacting around me they are doing research in ages

1-8 on behavior treatments at Florida Tech., maybe they'd be willing

to give info? It's site is research.fit.edu/scottcenter/contact/php

Just a thought. Their waiting list for kids is humongously long.

all States are bound by Federal Regulations, they can do MORE than the National requirements, but they CAN NOT do less. Pacer Center has advocacy, will give you free legal advice and guide you toward resources in your State, their # is 1-888-248-0822 Ask for Renelle , she was very helpful and knowledgeable concerning issues similar to the ones you've described (direct line 1 -952-838-1375). If you can not get her directly, ask for Jill ~ not sure of her department, could be intake or advocacy. It may take them up to two days to get back to you, but if it does take any longer than 2, call them back again with a reminder.

There is also an "Exceptional Children's Assistance Center (ECAC) Inc" they service your region (2). They are located in NC and their #'s are:1-800-962-6817, 1-704-892-1321, 1-704-892-5028 (fax)... web addy is www.ecac-parentcenter.org; email... ecacta@...

Good Luck in your endeavors Kate

A neuropsychological report is considered the " gold standard "

in the legal special ed community. A neuropsychological report

is based on concrete tests particularly in executive and social function two

area AS kids are deficit in. This report becomes

the tool for advocacy. I also had to have a psychologist and a

nuerologist write brief advocacy letters that my daughter needed

the supports spelled out in the neuropsy report.

I also had to hire our psychologist to come to the school IEP

meeting and give his opinion on what my daughter needed to have in place. They

listened to him.

I also am working with Yale Parent Training and Child Conduct Clinic in CT (over

the phone) as proof I have a behaviorist involved.

The new school accepts Yale's input. Yale has a fabuluous

reputation. There are ABA therapists you can hire privately

but I couldn't find any that were in my insurance plan.

Best of luck I know how hard advocacy is. I devote time

daily to my daughter's education planning. First I have to

get services in place and then I have to work to keep them

there. When kids are not obviously impaired in the way a child

with autism (low functioning) is it is a struggle to get and keep

services.

Best of luck,

, I am so late in reading your email but there are some things out there to find for such a case. Perhaps your atty has already gone there but there is a great paper written by Dr. Mulick of Ohio State on the cost of providing early intervention vs. not --> http://tinyurl.com/yl85m4e

A lot of the evidence for early intervention may be found by looking into Applied Behavior Analysis or "ABA". Also several gov't organizations did a study on educating kids with autism and it is full of great information on "best practices" --> http://tinyurl.com/yjajj25

You can also go to the gov't education website and look into "autism" in the search engine to come up with information.

The Ombudsman for your region is another avenue you may want to explore. I recently contacted mine, and WOW, he was SO helpful; names and #'s of govt contacts, protocol for filing a complaint, specific documents and policies to have sent to me, next step to take when govt agencies are not compliant, etc. He even asked for my ds medical dx and asked to be present at the next County Services meeting.... Woohoo... good advocates are out there, too bad they are so hard to find! GL !!
