My son Lucas retreats into fantasy a lot. It is a much kinder safer place for him than the realities of day to day world. His favourite character is Sharkboy from the sharkboy and lavagirl movie. He knows this movie off by heart and creates stories with Sharkboy as his companion.

How does it relate to his ASD? I think because Sharkboy and Lavagirl are creations of Max and as his dreams become reality, Max has to rescue his heroes and the world he created. He has lots of other fantasy favourites but Sharkboy and Lavagirl are the most enduring.

I was wondering if you your kids (or you, Aspie adults) have ever had a favorite character that they could completely relate to. For me, for the past 20 years, it was Doc Brown from the Back to the Future series. I now see that he comes across as someone with Asperger’s Syndrome, and now it’s clear that’s why I could relate to him. Watching BTTF was a source of comfort for me as a kid for that reason. To this day, Doc is my favorite fictional character of all time. What about the rest of you? Any interesting similar stories about you and your kids?
