Guest guest
My son is 5.5 years old and when told to draw a face he will write 1 or 2 of the letters of his name instead. He used to make at least a smiley face but I noticed recently he only draws the letters of his name. Has or does anyone else have this same issue? He is in a therapeutic learning center classroom and all of the other children have some form of disability as well but they all can make a face on the head. I guess it just kind of worried me today when I saw the other pictures. Thanks, Amy
Guest guest
Could it be that he is just getting bored with the task and acting up. My son is 6.5 with asperger's, and we homeschool. When he gets bored he does silly things on his paper like writing numbers when he is supposed to be copying sentences. Or purposely writing the wrong answers to math problems and swearing he can't do them when I know he can. And then he just giggles and keeps doing the same thing over and over. When he gets this way, I try to redirect to a different activity. It seems to stem from boredom with sit-down work. > > My son is 5.5 years old and when told to draw a face he will write 1 or 2 of the letters of his name instead. Guest guest
You know what that would make alot of sense...he sometimes will get done coloring a picture before the others does it perfectly and then he will get impulsive and then suddenly scribble the rest of the picture and you can't see what he really did. Maybe it is boredom and he just wants to move onto the next task.. Guest guest
Maybe he just can't focus for more than a minute or two with seat work. Copying sentences takes a lot of focus even for typical kids and at 6.5 I think I'd have avoided that completely with my son. It would have caused him to be very very silly. When he gets overwhelmed he sometimes gets silly. I'm not sure why. Getting up and doing things and being very physical is important for all boys and the younger they are the more they need it. With the added stress of sensory issues it's even more important. > > > > My son is 5.5 years old and when told to draw a face he will write 1 or 2 of the letters of his name instead. Guest guest
My 8 year old AS son, also fidgets when he has to do homework, he gets tons of homework and sometimes in the middle of homework, I have to send him to his room to rest, he sleep for an hour and then he finishes all, the anxiety goes down when they had plenty of rest. Anxiety makes them do silly things, it seems is the way they cope with anxiety. > > My son is 5.5 years old and when told to draw a face he will write 1 or 2 of the letters of his name instead. Guest guest
Did he do that at home when you ask him too, or just at school? If you draw with him does he participate? He might just be more interested in writing letters now. I've read that around 5-6 children would develop the interest for writing and reading, some of them would have that interest overwhelm other interests. So when given a pen, instead of what's asked, he might just be focused on writing.
Guest guest
We've been trying to do more hands on activities, but his OT wants him to work on his writing some. > > > > > > My son is 5.5 years old and when told to draw a face he will write 1 or 2 of the letters of his name instead. Guest guest
If it were me with my own ds, I would implement that into part of his program by having him draw a circle, then once he could do that, he would add eyes, then continue on to the appropriate level for his age. I would let him write his name under the picture. If he is very verbal, tell him you see his name but what does he look like? He might want to show you then? Some kids will when you make a game, " What does his head look like? A square, a triangle? etc. " Roxanna Whenever I feel blue, I start breathing again.
