my daughter likes to read street signs. She has been doing this since 3 years old! she will also read grafitti potty words so we have to be careful what she can see. From: bridget <beanniferj@...>Subject: ( ) Re: Unusual interests Date: Sunday, August 8, 2010, 5:28 PM

We have done sooooo many walks through parking lots reading license plates (well, that was back when he was 2 yrs old), and we continue to do walks every day (sometimes twice per day) looking at all the mailbox numbers (he is 4 yrs old now). Then he comes home and draws road maps with all the mailbox numbers in their proper places. He just recently discovered that almost all the streets also have numbers (like S-32-1659)... oh dear.

My son, now 30, is into pipe organs, antique tractors (especially Deeres) and family name origins.

Tyler (4.5yrs) prefers to draw and color with white. He uses the other colors also, but ALWAYS does something in white. We bought colored paper so that the white shows up for him. He draws the snow covered mountains, clouds, snowmen, etc. (recently even a toilet). Usually white crayons never get used, we have to keep buying new crayons just to get more white ones (lol).

can you get a nice black chalk board and use white chalk too? We use white sometimes on black construction paper and it looks so beautiful. what a neat facination with white crayons your son has. that is very nice that he likes something we all usually toss aside.CAthy

I just realized this week that my son has another unusual interest: dead end

streets. We passed by one in the stroller yesterday and my son started telling

me very excitedly how the last time Daddy went to the park they got to go down

the dead end street and look at it. (I checked with my husband later and it was

true.) Then I started to remember all the times in the car that he has requested

to go see a dead end street. When we set up a train track ( being his

number one special interest, if not an unusual one), he often wants to create

" parkings " for the trains - in other words, dead ends. Back to the numbers,

tonight he wanted to take 2 sets of " 12 " s to bed that he had made out of fridge

letter magnets. My son (not quite 3 years old) has not yet been officially dx

with AS, but surely these interests are not typical, right?

My child (4yo) is into dead end streets right now as well. He will draw maps of a neighborhood with all the mailbox numbers, and draw dead end street signs on it as well.

My child does this too (with the routes). He comes unglued if we do not go the route he is used to going. When he was 2yo, he had memorized ( & would announce with a delighted squeal) every exit number and all the overpass heights on the strip of interstate that we travel pretty much every day.

That is interesting. My son pays attentions to numbers all the time, numbers on the side of trucks, what hotel floor we stayed on past vacations. He says he remembers everything and I believe him. And he has visually remembered every route to every location we've gone to. If we veer off, he'll comment on it.

Just wanted to say my son too on the exit numbers and house numbers. When my son was about 3 we were in the grocery store one day and he shouted out "there's #47 mom". I could not figure out what he was talking about. Then it hit me...that is the number of their house. Pam :)

Speaking of the grocery store, we have to go down every aisle in order so my son

can see all of the numbers - but at least he is willing to shop with me :) His

new thing is street names. He wants to know the name of every single street we

go on when we drive somewhere and gets very annoyed about things like exit ramps

and parking lots which do not have specific names. Of course, he speaks often

about when he will get to drive the car, so maybe he just wants to learn his way

around town...did I mention he is 3 years old? Today my son told me that when he

is 5, he will be a man, lol.

Very interesting that they all like numbers......my son loves numbers and letters too, I can totally relate.....anytime we see a sign...he wants to know what it says......even when he already knows what is says...(ususally about 10 times) Ahh...I wish I could find kids locally so they could recite numbers to each other....

Yes, that would be great to have the kids doing numbers with each other! And

maybe I need one of those talking GPS things so that my son will not constantly

demand to know what street we are on!

We just had to drive to another city to go to my child's dentist appointment, to which we've been several times, but I forgot to bring the directions in the car with me. (I have absolutely no sense of direction and get lost at the drop of a hat.) Fortunately my little 4 year old genius boy was able to tell me the exits to take and which directions to turn on each street.

my son gets excited whenever he hears his name or sees it, he always says hey there's another me, it took me a long time to figure it out, but finally it clicked they have the same name, so he makes a connection even if it is a book
