Guest guest
I am hoping someone can help. I need to know what drs. are most experienced with aspergers Dx. I am having a lot of trouble getting help for my daughter. I was told that she had PDD then Aspergers then Brain Dysfunction and everything would be fine once she reaches 18 yrs of age because she is really just socially immature. The Dr. decided she couldn't have aspergers since she could talk and wanted to have friends. That children with Asperger do not want to have friends that they just don't care about stuff like that. That a child with Aspergers didn't text on cell phones or join chat rooms on the computer. I really need some help. Thanks
Guest guest
how old is your daughter? If you find a neuropsychologist that is very experienced with AS I think it works out well because a neuropsc will spend hours with your child. They take a very long detailed history. For my daughter's at age 9 I came prepared with tapes of conversation my daughter had with peers where she was very locked into her special interest and the peer was really trying to get her engaged in other things. The neurops find many issues and conducted many tests. I think the people working at major autism centers may get it right too. Look at the extensive information available at a place like Yale Child Study Center. I have learned a lot reading things from this group. http://childstudycenter.yale.edu/autism/aspergers.html Two neurologist did not think my daughter had AS, they thought she had Obessive compulsive disorder. They can't tell by looking at a child and just talking for one hour if there are processing speed issues, there are so many tests that can be done that neurologist don't often do (there must be some that do some testing though). So many therapist just saw oppositional defiant issues. One pschiatrist though she had bipolar (a bipolar expert of course). I really thik that a AS child's social skill issues are evident at about the age of 9 or 10 and more pronouced as they get older. Tape for your own advocacy issues you see. Get on tape your child talking about a special interest and not able to move on to another topic with gentle prompting. Pam > > I am hoping someone can help. Guest guest
She is 13 and I have had questions since she was 3. Whenever we would go shopping she would walk behind me pretending to be a dog. It's only been in the last year that we could have the radio on while she was in the car, the vacumn still bothers her. The list could just go on and on. A lot of things have been resolved however there are still no kids calling on the phone or visiting the house, no party invites etc. She has found a friend on the internet that lives out of town. She doesn't seem too concerned about it. She draws a lot and writes stories. Public school grades ok, no study skills, some trouble with other kids not to much, no special ed she wouldn't meet requirements for that. I have a lot of trouble getting her hygene under control she has to be reminded about shower, wash face / hands, brush hair seems to be unable to wash her own hair she trys but just can't do a very good job of it. Seems awkward using her hands. From: Pamela <susanonderko@...> Sent: Sat, April 3, 2010 10:08:58 PMSubject: ( ) Re: where do you go for help how old is your daughter? Guest guest
I think you need to find another doctor who is keeping up with the current research, which shows that many Aspies feel things deeply, they just don't express their feelings the same way as everyone else. AS in girls is different than it is for boys. I've met plenty of Aspie girls through my son's school and a lot of them LOVE to talk, talk, talk. My son prefers texting and computers to conversation. I think it's because it eliminates all that non-verbal stuff that is so confusing. Where do you live? Maybe others in this group can help you find someone local. I don't recommend that you wait until she's 18 to see if she grows out of it. The earlier you can work with her, the better it will be for her as an adult. Guest guest
That does sound like AS. It does not sound like she has very many academic issues if she is able to keep up with a very busy middle school curriculum. And it doesn't sound like she has much anxiety or outburst behaviors. So she probably has pretty good transitioning mindset skills and executive function skills. So that is great that your daughter doesn't have servere behavior problems at home or school and that she doesn't sound like her anxiety is very bad at all. But her social impairment sounds severe. I agree with the other response that you should find an AS expert that can help get her DX with AS. Or if not and you can afford it get her the social skill training she needs during the summer at least. Don't have her home alone. Pam > > > > I am hoping someone can help.
