I had to ask what DAN Drs were too when I first heard of them. It stands for

Defeat autism

now (which meant nothing to me when that was offered as the answer.) Basically

they take

more of a biomedical approach to treatment. Here is a site that I found helpful

as a source

of DAN info and autism info.

http://www.autismwebsite.com/ARI/dan/dan.htm

I haven't looked into DAN doctor training very much, but I thought I read

somewhere that

they only need 9 hours of training to become a DAN doctor (Im assuming that's

after they

are a doctor - ha ha.) So for me personally, I look at the doctor's background

in addition

to the fact that s/he is a DAN doctor.

One thing I would say is that if you go to a DAN doctor and they want to do a

bunch of

tests...see which ones you can get through your primary doctor so it will be

covered. I

haven't gone to a DAN doctor yet, but I did request some of the tests suggested

in the

books I read about DAN through my son's pediatrician. Might as well have as

much

covered by insurance as possible. I also think that I might as well have as

much info for

the DAN Dr as possible to make it worth the money. If your child's doctor is

open

discussing what the DAN doctor says (or books say) you can gain more knowledge

about

the different approaches. My sons pediatrician is very open and asked me to

setup an

appointment with him after the DAN doctor so he could discuss with me what he

thought

was good and what he thought was a waste and WHY. He knows that I require him

to

backup any statements he makes and I actually think he enjoys it. Then I am

able to make

informed decisions about my son's treatment. I would be willing to try

anything, but I

have limited resources and I want to make every dollar count! Hopefully this

isn't too

much information, but sorry if it is!

One more thing I was taught by my father-in-law who is a scientist. When

looking at

research you should question it's validity. The easiest way to do this is by

looking at

where the studies have been published (usually listed at the end of an article

or book.) If it

was published in JAMA (journal of the american medical association) or other

credible

sources it is more worth while. If it has only been published online or in a

limited area

without peer review you should question the data for its validity before making

a decision

about what it says. I add this info because when I was trying to figure out

what I should

do for my son I felt like I was drowning in information that was contradicting

and

confusing. Taking this approach is so much easier than deciding for myself if

the data is

concrete considering I don't have the knowledge to actually make such

assumptions! It is

also a great way to decide treatment options with the limited funds I have!

Are there any DAN drs out there who take any of the medicaid health plans

(Peachstate).

Are there any close to Covington, Newton county, GA.

Does Dr Rubin do biomedical alternative treatment and any kind of testing for

metal toxicity?

Most of the DAN docs don't take any insurance or Medicaid. I think

Dr. Guest in McDonough was taking some insurance, but she is

not a full DAN-doc. You might want to join the AutismbiomedGA

group for more info on your options. The only developmental

pediatrician doing DAN treatments in Georgia is Dr. son-

Lippett. You can learn more about her on the AutismbiomedGA group

from parents who have seen her. Many parents go out of state for

their DAN docs. Most DAN docs do phone appointments with lab work

done at Children's Healthcare of Atlanta and one in-person visit per

year.

Good luck. Biomed has really helped our son tremendously,

especially addressing gastrointestinal issues and chelation

(transdermal, suppository, and IV).
