Autism: unable to handle the world's chemicals

April 28, 2005

Subject: Autistic children start out genetically more vulnerable to

oxidative damage and susceptible to environmental and toxic attack

than healthy children.

Autism is the biological hobgoblin of modern medicine. We are in the

midst of an epidemic yet have few clues why it's happening. A new

study takes us a step toward understanding the disease, and opens up

the possibility of hope.

In the last 15 years we have seen a ten fold increase in the number

of children diagnosed with autism. Part of this increase has been

attributed to increased awareness and better recognition of the

disease. Much of this jump is still real. There is a genetic

component to the disease but genetics alone cannot account for the

rapid increase we are experiencing.

Autism typically shows up in toddlers and is characterized by limited

language skills, poor social interaction, repetitive behaviors, and

limited interests. Autism often runs in families suggesting a genetic

cause. A recent study by S. Jill in the April, 2005 issue of

Biology may help us make significant inroads toward understanding and

treating this autism. is the director of the department of

biochemical genetics at Arkansas Children's Hospital. In a study of

the blood of some apparently healthy children, the biochemistry of

one sample stood out. It turned out the atypical sample came from a

boy who was autistic. Curious, got blood samples from 20 other

autistic children. All the samples exhibited a similar unusual

biochemical fingerprint, which has now confirmed in 75 autistic

children. In a control group of 75 healthy kids none showed this same

chemical fingerprint in their blood.

The autistic kids had unusually low concentrations of the antioxidant

glutathione in their cells. The ratio of active glutathione to its

inactive breakdown products was also unusually low.

" This pattern is consistent with an inability to detoxify [poisons],

especially heavy metals, " such as mercury or lead, says. That's

because glutathione normally binds to heavy metals and the body then

targets the molecular complex for elimination.

This new information makes sense in light of the therapies we have

found clinically useful in treating autism. Several of the useful

autism treatments have focused on reducing toxic load in the

patient's body, especially heavy metals but also a range of organic

poisons. These new ideas also tie in with the work of Bernard Shaw

whose focus on bowl dysbiosis in treating autism now makes more

sense. Shaw as a researcher at the CDC in Atlanta , noticed that some

autistic children had high levels of fungal metabolites in their

blood secondary to fungal or yeast growth in their intestines. These

kids improved with anti- fungal treatment. Some of the chemicals

produced by yeast can be neurotoxic; autistic kids may simply be more

sensitive to these chemicals than healthy kids and experience

negative effects even at very low concentrations.

This new understanding may also help us understand the vaccine

business which has been so confusing. Clinical experience tells us

that autistic kids routinely have elevated levels of toxic metals,

especially mercury. There is an ongoing debate whether inoculating

kids with vaccines preserved with mercury compounds trigger autism.

Although there is plenty of anecdotal stories of kids supporting this

theory, kids becoming autistic shortly after vaccinations,

researchers have never been able to see a clear statistical trend.

The manufacturers insist vaccines are safe. Now that we can identify

a genetic subgroup by their blood chemistry, we may be able to find a

statistical correlation. Vaccines may not trigger autism in `normal'

kids but could be the last straw of toxic load in kids deficient in

glutathione.

If this information " holds " we will be able to identify susceptible

kids by their blood chemistry. Those kids at risk for autism can be

protected environmentally to reduce their toxic exposure. There are

nutritional tricks to erase this blood fingerprint and raise

glutathione levels in healthy people; the same tricks appear to work

in these kids. Whether or not changing this blood chemistry in

autistic kids will reverse the disease process is the big question.

In the mean time practitioners should certainly try to increase

glutathione in autistic kids to see what happens. It's one of those

things that won't hurt and might help a whole lot.

If nothing else watching for this chemical fingerprint in children

with a genetic predisposition to become autistic may lead to early

intervention and disease prevention. This is exciting news; expect to

see follow ups on this in the future.

Metabolic biomarkers of increased oxidative stress and impaired

methylation capacity in children with autism

S Jill , Cutler, Stepan Melnyk, Stefanie Jernigan, Laurette

Janak, W Gaylor and A Neubrander

Background : Autism is a complex neurodevelopmental disorder that

usually presents in early childhood and that is thought to be

influenced by genetic and environmental factors. Although abnormal

metabolism of methionine and homocysteine has been associated with

other neurologic diseases, these pathways have not been evaluated in

persons with autism.

Objective: The purpose of this study was to evaluate plasma

concentrations of metabolites in the methionine transmethylation and

transsulfuration pathways in children diagnosed with autism.

Design: Plasma concentrations of methionine, S-adenosylmethionine

(SAM), S-adenosylhomocysteine (SAH), adenosine, homocysteine,

cystathionine, cysteine, and oxidized and reduced glutathione were

measured in 20 children with autism and in 33 control children. On

the basis of the abnormal metabolic profile, a targeted nutritional

intervention trial with folinic acid, betaine, and methylcobalamin

was initiated in a subset of the autistic children.

Results: Relative to the control children, the children with autism

had significantly lower baseline plasma concentrations of methionine,

SAM, homocysteine, cystathionine, cysteine, and total glutathione and

significantly higher concentrations of SAH, adenosine, and oxidized

glutathione. This metabolic profile is consistent with impaired

capacity for methylation (significantly lower ratio of SAM to SAH)

and increased oxidative stress (significantly lower redox ratio of

reduced glutathione to oxidized glutathione) in children with autism.

The intervention trial was effective in normalizing the metabolic

imbalance in the autistic children .

Conclusions: An increased vulnerability to oxidative stress and a

decreased capacity for methylation may contribute to the development

and clinical manifestation of autism.

Experimental Biology 2005. April 2. San Diego . Abstract

Low plasma methionine, cysteine, and glutathione levels are

associated with increased frequency of common polymorphisms affecting

methylation and glutathione pathways in children with autism

S. Jill , Stepan Melnyk, Stefanie Jernigan. Pediatrics,

University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences, 1120 Marshall St. , Slot

512.40B, Little Rock , AR , 72202

Autism is a complex neurodevelopmental disorder that is thought to

involve both genetic and environmental factors. The 10-fold increase

in the prevalence of autism in the last 15 years is a major public

health concern. Although abnormal thiol metabolism has been

associated with other neurologic diseases, these pathways and related

polymorphisms have not been evaluated in autistic children. Plasma

levels of metabolites in methionine transmethylation and

transsulfuration pathways were measured in 90 autistic and 45 control

children using HPLC with electrochemical detection. Polymorphic

variants in transcobalamin II (TCII), methylene- tetrahydrofolate

reductase (MTHFR), methionine synthase reductase (MTRR),

catecholamine-O-methyltransferase (COMT), and glutathione-S-

transferase (GST) M1/T1 were evaluated in 233 autistic children and

183

controls. The results indicated that mean levels of methionine,

cysteine, total glutathione, and the ratio of oxidized to reduced

glutathione were significantly decreased among the autistic children.

The frequency of MTHFR 677CT/1298AG heterozygosity, TCII 776GG, COMT

1947GG, and the GST M1/T1 double null genotype was increased in the

autistic children relative to controls. We hypothesize that an

increased vulnerability to oxidative stress (environmental and/or

intracellular) may contribute to the development and clinical

manifestations of autism.

7 Natural Ways To Increase Glutathione Production

June 7th, 2007

Glutathione has recently become a cornerstone to improving health

naturally.

You may already be aware that increasing the amount of glutathione

your body produces each day is very beneficial to many of the natural

systems that make and keep you HEALTHY.

Hopefully, you are also keenly aware that your personal level of

glutathione directly affects your body's ability to reduce and

control chronic inflammation.

So, how does one increase personal glutathione production?

Can you just " take " glutathione?

That is a good question but despite what some dishonest supplement

sellers would have you believe, you cannot eat glutathione, your body

MUST make it inside the cells. The false claim that you can just eat

glutathione, made by some supplement scoundrels, can be likened to

saying that all you have to do to get smart is eat brain tissue

supplements. (Now, I don't suppose anyone would buy into this but you

never know.)

So, really, you have 2 choices

1. Take drugs (pharmaceuticals) that cause your body to increase its

glutathione production.

2. Take natural supplements that promote glutathione production

inside your cells.

Our approach is always toward the natural route, but in case you were

wondering, the pharmaceutical drugs that are shown to raise

glutathione (GSH) levels are briefly listed at the bottom of this

post. But first, here are 7 natural ways to increase glutathione

production inside your cells.

7 Natural Glutathione Boosters

1. L-Cysteine

o Since the amount of cysteine in our body determines how much

glutathione your body can make, why not just eat cysteine as a

supplement? Well, you can, but research shows there would be

negligible benefits and potential risks. Cysteine taken as a dietary

supplement can promote hypercysteinemia and potential toxicity.

2. L-Methionine

o Methionine is indeed a precursor of glutathione but the metabolic

transformation of methionine into glutathione is a complex process

which has the potential for " going astray " . For example, methionine

is also a precursor of homocysteine, a risk factor in the development

of atherosclerosis (hardening of the arteries).

3. Melatonin

o Melatonin is produced by the pineal gland in the brain and has many

roles in the body, one being its ability to raise glutathione levels

in certain tissues of the body, including brain, liver, and muscle

tissue. The long term safety of products that promote melatonin

production has not been established and should be used in

consultation with appropriate health professionals.

4. Glutamine

o Glutamine is an amino acid found in abundance in our body. It is

tremendously beneficial to the body and is easily found in a healthy

diet. Also, supplemental glutamine must be kept absolutely dry or it

will degrade into ammonia, a toxin to the body. Due to its abundance

in a healthy diet and the risks of storing it, glutamine is not an

ideal supplement.

5. Lipoic Acid (alpha-lipoic acid)

o Lipoic acid occurs naturally in the body but can also be taken as a

supplement with effectiveness. This supplement works well in

conjunction with healthy levels of glutathione but studies show that

if taken by a person whose glutathione levels are too low, lipoic

acid actually promotes oxidation.

6. Silymarin (milk thistle)

o This herbal extract seems to stimulate the growth and regeneration

of damaged liver cells but also has been shown to significantly

increase glutathione production. However, some toxic reactions are

noted by some, such as gas, cramps and diarrhea.

7. Whey Proteins

o Fresh or " bioactive " milk whey contains potent glutathione

precursors. Unfortunately, by the time milk reaches your table, it

has been pasteurized and has lost its bioactivity, and its

glutathione enhancing benefits. However, a neutraceutical called

Immunocal is available which is essentially the whey proteins

harvested from milk and kept in a bioactive or undenatured state.

There are no known side effects associated with taking bioactive whey

proteins and, since there is no lactose in whey proteins, lactose

intolerant people are not adversely affected.

The natural health community agrees that helping your body increase

its glutathione production is extremely beneficial. Given the many

choices above, it may be difficult to know where to start.

Inflammation911.com actively promotes Immunocal as the best source

for glutathione enhancement. Mainly because of the the years of

research behind bioactive whey proteins and the patents held by

Immunocal's manufacturer, Immunotec Research Ltd., which ensures a

consistent and safe product.

Along with Immunocal, a supplement of lipoic acid and milk thistle

prove to be a well rounded regimen leading to increased glutathione

production.

Pharmaceuticals That Increase Glutathione Production

1. N-Acetyl-Cysteine (NAC)

o This drug is a variant of the amino acid L-cysteine which has

been " enhanced " so it makes the trip through the digestion process.

This drugs works well but must be swallowed or injected several times

a day to maintain consistent glutathione levels. It also carries a

certain level of toxicity.

2. S-Adenosyl-Methionine (SAM)

o The drug is a form of methionine which has been partially converted

to cysteine. It may react poorly with antidepressants and has side

effects of dry mouth, agitation and gastrointestinal problems.

3. Ornithine Decaroxylase (OTC) and Oxothiazolidine carboxylate (OTZ)

o These 2 drugs are actually synthetic delivery sources. Kind of like

a " taxi " which carries chemicals to your liver which then prompt it

to make glutathione. These drugs are still being tested.

4. GSH Monoesters and GSH Diesters

o These drugs are also delivery systems and despite significant

research, the long term safety of these products is open to question.

Inflammation911.com actively promotes Immunocal as the best source

for glutathione enhancement.

I don't agree with Inflammation911.com. Immunocal may be good for

people with inflamation BUT for people with autism you need:

Glutathione PleoLyposome

It supplies both glutathione and the right type of phosphocholine. It

is a major breakthrough in the treatment of autism. Some of its first

users were large autism clinics in Asia. The phosphocholine in it is

of the highest quality imported from Germany and does not contain GMO

soy. There are similar products that do not use as high quality a

source for the phosphocholine. Unfortunately, this source is not

stable, and gels made with it can lose effectiveness in too short a

short period of time, and would not do as good a job of repairing the

myelin sheath.

Even though it contains soy, it will not cause allergic reactions in

children allergic to soy. That is because allergic reactions are

triggered by proteins, not fats. And there are no soy proteins in

this product.

The suggested dosage is for an adult to use three or more teaspoons a

day, every day or four days a week, depending on how aggressive they

may wish to be, a child could use a half a teaspoon or less a day,

and could work up after a while to a teaspoon a day. One bottle holds

10 teaspoons. Usage may be reduced once significant improvement has

occurred and glutathione production by the body has been improved.

Using Glutathione PleoLyposome is the very fastest way to detoxify

brain cells of the toxic chemicals disrupting it. It may well prove

to be the most important supplement to give to improve autism.

Especially as the more you take, the more the myelin sheath will be

repaired.

TESTIMONIAL

" I am very excited to share with you some of the immediate results

that your product Glutathione Pleolyposome has brought about in my

four year old autistic son Corbin. The morning after I gave him the

very first dose, he was intently staring me in the eyes unlike he had

ever done before.

Prior to this time he would give fleeting eye contact and would stare

blankly into nothing (like day-dreaming), but didn't seem to focus on

another's face. Now he seems to really focus on not only other's

faces but also on everything else. I am guessing it is as if things

are becoming clearer to him.

" After his second dose, he amazed me even more by going into the

bathroom and standing by the toilet as if to tell me that he had to

use the potty. I have worked with him for over a year and he had

never done that before. The best he had done previously was to lead

me to the bathroom. He has been fairly consistent at walking into the

bathroom and standing next to the toilet when he has to go ever

since.

" The results amaze me; Corbin has spoken new words and even a few

phrases since he has started taking Glutathione Pleolyposome less

than on a week ago. For example, when he saw his mother's yellow car

pull up, he said " yellow. " I have worked with him on a few colors,

red & blue, but he barely spoke them, and I never really even tried

to get him to say yellow before. Another recent development is when

he stands at the door of the refrigerator and matches up the magnetic

letters of the alphabet by shape.

" I have always known my son was intelligent, but I couldn't focus him

or get an accurate idea of what he was able to comprehend. Now he

seems to be showing me what he is able to comprehend by more than

simple leading and pointing. He has been receiving 20 hours of

supportive services each week, but there was never really a changed

noted that resulted from the services.

" My son was advancing on par with other children his age until he was

approximately 18 months old; more than coincidentally it was very

soon after he had a round of vaccinations that his symptoms started.

He lost most of his acquired speech, he stopped most eye contact, and

he started displaying other behaviors such as spinning and

inappropriate use or attachments to objects.

" From what I understand certain children are less able to detoxify

when they are exposed to substances such as Thimerisol, and children

diagnosed with ASD (Autism Spectrum Disorder) are known to produce

lower levels of Glutathione which contributes to the detoxification

process.

" Like many other parents of children with ASD, I don't expect a

miracle moment where my child just snaps out of it and completely

functions at a level appropriate for his age, but I do believe that

much of ASD is just a label and that our children can improve or even

recover from the diagnosis.

" I once compared the symptoms of mercury poisoning to the symptoms of

autism. The two conditions have many similarities, but my son had a

few that were not related to autism.

" I could go on and on about all of this, but I really just want to

get the word out that my " autistic " son continues to display very

positive results in the short-time he has been taking Glutathione

Pleolyposome. The product is so easy to use; I just put a teaspoon of

it in his juice first thing in the morning.

" I am very confident that with continued use, my son will continue to

find his way back. There have been times when I have felt defeated

and considered giving up, resigned to the fact that Corbin might not

be able to advance much further. If I were to believe the medical

community then I would have, but my son is too important for me not

to keep trying to do everything possible (without risking his health)

to assist him to become all he is capable of. I don't believe in

miracle products, but I do believe in results, and Glutathione

Pleolyposome has brought about results faster than I could have hoped

for. It would be selfish of me not to share information about

Glutathione Pleolyposome with others, as I hope many others will also

benefit from it. On that note, I will end this, but I will definitely

keep you posted of Corbin's continued progress.

Thank you so much! "

Sincerely,

Vince A. Porter

To have any hope of reversing autism, it is vital to do as much as

possible to eliminate heavy metals like mercury and aluminum from the

brain. Glutathione PleoLyposome will neutralize these in cells, along

with detoxifying the other lightweight toxins that are disrupting the

brain - and helping to eliminate viruses in the cells. And repairing

the myelin sheath. Many parents report that is helping their

children.

Kind regards
