Mold to be removed from Medary during break

By:Jerrod Niedermyer, The Brookings Register December 13, 2001

The Brookings School District will remove mold from part of Medary

Elementary School over the holiday break.

The mold was discovered late November when maintenance and custodial

personnel were checking the school building's heating and cooling pipes -

located in tunnels running under the school - for leaks.

Dave , assistant superintendent for finance and budget, reported the

mold discovery to the school board at its Monday night meeting.

The mold appeared to be confined to the tunnels, told board

members.

Trace amounts of mold also were discovered in a classroom, but were believed

to have been brought up by workers, said.

Geotech, of Sioux Falls, sampled the mold and determined it was capable of

aggravating allergies and asthma.

Brubakken, principal at Medary Elementary, said no health problems

had been reported by students or staff in the school.

Brubakken added that Geotech's report indicated the level of airborne

material was low at Medary.

Another Sioux Falls business, Intek, will remove the mold.

said he did not yet know how much the removal would cost, but the

board gave him approval to proceed with the process anyway.

" We don't want to mess around with anything like that, " said. " We

just want to get rid of it. "

The holiday break lasts from Dec. 21 through Jan. 2. During that time, the

mold will be removed, said.
