warning about Magnetix, responses to several posts

If you have a child who puts things in his mouth, be very vigilant if he has a

set of Magnetix building pieces. A child from our area swallowed several, was

hopitalized, and needed to have surgery. Luckily, he told his mother, and he

saw a doctor ASAP. I've heard that several kids have swallowed them, and at

least one died. I just heard about this yesterday, and I know that our kids

tend to swallow things even more than NT kids. My son swallowed 13 Kerplunk

marbles when he was at a relatives' house, and someone here mentioned about

finding erasers passing through recently, so I thought that I should share this

warning.

If you think that your child has swallowed something, an x-ray can often show

where it is lodged, and what it is. Danger signs would be severe abdominal pain,

and spiking a fever, which is a sign of infection. However, the Magnetix are

especially dangerous because of something leaching out which can be toxic, not

just because of piercing the digestive tract, or getting stuck, so go to the ER

ASAP.

for n, with the son who has Angelman's syndrome and constipation. I

don't see any probiotics listed. I would definitely suggest giving non-dairy

acidophilus. Also, massaging the belly area in a circular manner is also

supposed to help-I can't remember whether you are supposed to use a clockwise,

or counter-clockwise motion, though. If the skin is yellowish, you are correct

to say that it could be from eating lots of carrots,etc. (My son had this-but

some people describe it as more orangey tones, rather than yellow). Yellow

could be a sign of jaundice, problems with liver function, hepatitis, etc. You

may want to try milk thistle extract (silymarin), and keep in touch with your

doctor regarding any possible need to test liver enzyme levels, etc. I think

that abdominal tenderness is a danger signal for this. I don't remember if you

are the person who mentioned finding the erasers, but if so, see the above

paragraph.

for Darci, with the 9 year old with increased aluminum- does he go to school,

and if so, could it be from things at school (aluminum cookware in the kitchen,

or classroom, etc., or anything which he might be putting in his mouth, or

absorbing in another manner)?
