Summit Academy Schools will present their sought after “therapeutic education” model to help those students suffering with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and Asperger’s develop better coping skills, a sense of belonging and self-discipline in addressing their academic, social and emotional needs. Lavoie, M.A., M.Ed., nationally recognized for his expertise in learning disabilities, will present his perspective on effective therapeutic techniques for children with ADHD, Asperger’s Syndrome and other learning disabilities. Lavoie has delivered his message to over 500,000 parents and professionals throughout North America and delivered keynote addresses for all three of the major special needs advocacy organizations in the United States (Learning Disabilities Association, Council for Exceptional Children, Children with Attention Deficit Disorder) and has appeared on CBS Morning News, Good Morning America and ABC Evening News. Lavoie is best known for his videos How Difficult Can This Be? F.A.T. City Workshop and Last One Picked, First One Picked On: The Social Implications of Learning Disabilities. He has consulted with the Public Broadcasting Service, The New York Times, National Center for Learning Disabilities, Girl Scouts of America and Child Magazine. “We’re thrilled to be hosting this very important conference at Gordon, particularly since our graduate and undergraduate education majors continue to encounter children suffering from these syndromes in the classroom,” says, Janet S. Arndt, Ed.D, assistant professor of Education at Gordon and conference presenter. “We also want to encourage local teachers, principles, superintendents and parents who want to learn more about ADHD and Asperger’s syndrome to attend and join the conversation.” Arndt, also a former classroom teacher, counselor and principal, will present on “Social Competence: The Forgotten Component of School Success.” The conference will also feature ph J. Bove, director of Therapeutic Martial Arts and Outdoor Experiential Education at Summit Academy Schools. Bove combines his knowledge of adventure-based learning certification to create one of today’s most successful therapeutic activity programs for students with ADHD and Asperger’s. His presentation will focus on how this program has been integrated into the curriculum at Summit Academy Schools, where it is currently used to help over 1,700 students.
