Guest guest
Several years ago when my daughter was about 12, a reputable institution did NOT like the tegretol that she was on to control seizures. It was not working well and their take was that depakote was a much better med for children. For her, the switch was a disaster. Depakote actually seemed to provoke seizures. They began occurring very regularly approx 1-1.5 hours after dosing. The med also changed her seizure pattern for the worse. Instead of the 'out to lunch', wandering, hand wringing, chewing pattern that had been 'seizure', depakote added a turning blue, hard to find perpheral pulses, total loss of consciousness aspect to each seizure. When she was 16, we trialed gfcfsf. The gluten, casein, and soy are seizure triggers for her. The seizures are a delayed response-8-12 after she eats an offending item[they occur despite any med she is on!]. Other foods [peanut, cocoa, cola and some others] give her what I call 'pre- seizure behavior' - nasty, irritable and diificult to reason with! She gets a wild eyed glassy look with hugely dilated pupils. Going gfcfsf was the best thing we did for seizure control. It was very scary as the first few days of it looked like dts with MANY seizures. The seizures tapered by day 4 and were gone by day 5. Once we got pure on the diet, it was easy to see the connection. That too was a BIG hassle as even her seizure medicine had a milk component. > > my 14 year old son is going thourgh a meds change when we starting > cutting back on seizure meds, that he had been taking for 6 months,to > put him on a new meds is behavior got worse than it has every been is > any child have seizures, and autism to. if so are they on depakota if so > how does it work for them. >
Guest guest
Two of my three sons have seizures. Noah, ASD, has been on several seizure meds, including depakote. We took him off after several months due to rapid weight gain. Depakote has been shown to improve symptoms of autism. My other son, diagnosed with autistic like tendencies, was on depakote as well. We had to take him off because he became very emotional and suffered from paranoia (he thought everyone was being nice to him just to trick him--scary!). He's now on Zarontin and is making great progress. Noah is starting Zarontin once we wean him off Lamictal. Guest guest
My son use to have severe seizures. He was on both Lamictal and Topamax... and was still have absent type seizures constantly ...with several grand mal type seizures as well.... However, he is being weaned from the Topamax right now. We had to place him on a strict strict diet ... He also takes several supplements that are targeted at helping control his seizures. Things like histidine, taurine, methionine ... all have helped him become seizure free. He can't have gluten/casein, corn or soy at all, not even with enzymes ... But the good news is he is totally and completely seizure free now for well over a year. He use to have upward to 30 or more a day... and we have been able to cut his seizure medication in half ... and are working toward the goal of ending them entirely ... So far so good ... I have been really slow on the withdrawl of the medication .. watching for the return of the seizures ... but so far none has happened. He is happier and healthier than anytime in his 15 years of life.
