Wow, that croupy cough could be asthma? Red dyes aren’t very helpful

either.

Next time he gets that cough, just give him dye free benedryl. For my nt

food allergy guy, I can not tell you how many times it starts out like a

cold symptom, then comes on the croupy cough. Only to figure out he’s

having an allergic reaction to something. My guy is on flovent, daily

maintenance for asthma and albuterol for a rescue med if need be. If a food

allergy relate issue and I think asthma, the abluterol doesn’t work.

Usually I hit the benedryl then. If it works, I know it was food related.

Very hard. Hope this helps.

over the counter medicine

Hi listers,

This is off topic slightly, but wondering if you guys have input.

Long story short,my son has always had a very sensitive stomach. But

my husband and I don't seem to agree on what the best path to take to

help him when he gets a cold or flu

We've done the diet in the past, without huge improvement, and now he's

just taking enzymes (houston's) which I thought was helping.

But it seems like when my boy gets sick, it involves some sort of a

croupy cough. He tended to get stomach aches after we give the over

the counter cough medicine, so I never do not unless it is totally

necessary.

Several weeks ago, when he had another croupy cough and not feeling

well, we gave him some cough expecterant (I felt a bit guilted into it

by my husband, but no one wants to see their not feel well)

I gave him Target brand chest congestant

The ingredients in it are: caramel, citric acid, FD & CRed 40, flavors,

gluce, glycerin, high fructose corn syrup, menthol, saccarin, sodium,

sodium benzonate, water

He immediatly had a stomach ache after we gave him the medicine, but

eventually his cough went away.

However, since then, his behaviors have worsened, he won't even go out

of the house, and I basically have to force him to go to school. He

says it's too loud, and there are too many people. And he's had off

and on stomach aches ever since, especially ones right after eating.

He even says his back hurts, that's a new one.

Even though he has had a BM every other day,and pretty formed, I gave

him some laxative this weekend to see if that helps with the stomach

aches.

Do you think that the effects of one dose of cough medicine could cause

this sensitivity weeks later?

If it is constipation, do you think that's all it is or could one of

the ingredients in the medicine irritated his stomach so badly?

Thanks very much for any ideas.

Hi Missy-I have had the same experience with my son . Once he is

sensitized it seems to stay with him awhile. Two years ago when there were a lot

of

hurricanes in the East (U.S.) became very afraid. He had had some

problems with food. Mostly with eating wheat that he was not allowed. The only

ingredients in that cough medicine that you used that could tolerate would

be

the caramel, citric acid, glycerin and water. Any single one of the other

ingredient by itself would create the problems you are describing if my son

had taken it. Once my son starts getting scared it seems to take over

everything. I had to drag him into school and he was always asking to go or stay

home. He also became oversensitive to noise and wouldn't go in a room with more

than a couple people in it. We ended up having to put him on an antianxiety drug

(celexa 10 mg) in order to help quell his fears. He had basically shut down

and was not learning in school at all. We still have trouble around times of

great stress in the news over weather or very horrific news. But as long as I

keep his diet clean of all the artificial ingredients he does fairly well most

of the time. Once a system is sensitizes it can take quite a lot to calm it. I

guess this is not much help except to know that this is very possible and

probably he has become over sensitive for the time. And as an aside, my husband

and I have trouble seeing eye to eye on how to work with our son as well. I do

homeopathy and my husband wants our son taken to the neurologist. I try to make

sure my alternative Drs. are also MD's and I also see both types of Drs. for

his treatment. When he had croup I took him to the hospital (it was in the

middle of the night) and they gave him a steroid shot. I asked for the smallest

dose necessary and then the next morning I took him to the homeopath to treat

the croup. So we do both and sometimes it can cause conflict but we always try

to do what will cause the least harm and do the most help for . It is a

tough call sometimes. Laurie

For coughs and just about any other time you're not feeling great,

try 3 peptizide, or AFP, between meals, about 3 or 4 times a day. I

learned this from both Devin and . It really works for us and

we're not ingesting all that junk from commercial cough syrups.

At my house, lots of vitamin C, and olive leaf extract.

Usually, a few drops of GSE for a few days will eliminate that here.

Sound sensitivity, at my house, usually meant yeast overgrowth.

Biotin, Candidase, and GSE were very helpful here.

Yeast overgrowth can cause constipation.
