We have made excellent progress thanks to you and other like minded folks--

seems like just yesterday the signers of this petition totalled less than 3000

President Bush personally backs a drive to screen the entire US

population, beginning with WHO's in school and including preschool children, for

undiagnosed mental illness. Like the " patriot act " , this program bears an

Orwellian ID--ridiculous---New Freedom Initiative Thousands of schools are

already participating in screening their pupils. Some states require parental

consent, but, you can imagine what the default solution is on lost, illegible,

no response to authorization forms---keeping in mind that government bureaucrats

The Florida Senate Health Regulation committee is meeting tomorrow Febuary 21,

2007 to consider a bill to ban Shock Treatment on kids under 18 in Florida.

How Electric Shock " Works "

1. The patient is injected with an anesthetic to block out pain and a muscle

relaxant to shut down muscular activity and prevent spinal fractures.

2. Electrodes are placed on the temples bilaterally (from one side of the

brain to the other) or unilaterally (front to back on one side of the brain).

3. A rubber gag is placed in the mouth to keep teeth from breaking or patients

from biting their tongues.

4. Between 180 and 480 volts of electricity are sent searing through the

brain.

5. To meet the brain’s demand for oxygen, blood flow to the brain can increase

as much as 400%. Blood pressure can increase 200%. Under normal conditions, the

brain uses a blood-brain barrier to keep itself healthy against harmful toxins

and foreign substances. With electroshock, harmful substances “leak” from blood

vessels into the brain tissue, causing swelling. Nerve cells die. Cellular

activity is altered. The physiology of the brain is altered.

6. The results are memory loss, confusion, loss of space and time orientation

and even death.

7. Most patients are given a total of six to 12 shocks, one a day, three times

a week.

Ask the foremost psychiatrists and they have no explanation to justify why or

how their “treatment” works. It is literally as scientific as sticking one’s

head in a light socket. Do it often enough and you will become disoriented,

confused, lose your memory or even die. Same result as ECT.

Texas, California, Colorado, Louisiana have passed similar laws. South

Dakota, Tennessee, Utah have imposed limitations;

ECT is prohibited by the Florida Department of Juvenile Justice. However, it

has been documented that ECT has been given to 15, 16, and 17 year old girls

paid by Medicaid in Florida (your tax dollars) over the last 5 years.

Hmm. That seems like not the brightest idea to do shock treatments on

underage people. I do know a few people who suffered from such

debilitating depression (almost coma-like) who swear that shock

treatments were the only thing that helped them. I was horrified when

they first told me this, remembering how it was misused decades ago.

But, apparently it still can help some people. The people I spoke to

also said most of the memory (or all of it) comes back. For what it's

Yep, it is being used, but, due to increased knowledge of how the brain

functions and is structured, it has changed. It is only used for extreme

depression that has not shown any progress with psychotherapy or medication and

are suicidal, it is usually a last resort. The thing is, they have found that it

does indeed work, which I know is scary. There is some memory loss, anterograde

amnesia to be exact, which means that the person may have trouble learning more

information, it is usually for a brief period, yet it gets worse with successive

treatments. They can also lose memories from the recent past, including the

treatments themselves. I guess you have to decide which is worse, living a life

suffering from extreme depression or losing some of your memory function. I

don't think that it should be given to children who are not able to make that

decision for themselves.

With that said, I am vehemently opposed to TeenScreen, it reeks of greedy

doctors trying to convince parents that their children need drugs or services

that may not be necessary. I am a firm believer in parental rights and feel that

services should be made available to parents if the parents feel that they need

them. I also have a problem with Teen Screen being " opt out " while it should be

" opt in " .
