Some doctors say that it is caused by herpes virus but I am convinced that it has to do more with problems in the immune system (allergies). When I was a child I suffered a lot from this canker sores, and also had allergies and asthma. When asthma and allergies gone, canker sores dissapeared. Now, when my son had canker sores he really becomes autistic. It is incredible how this problem affects his behavior. If somebody has any idea, please share with us. I get them alot, as well as my lil half-sister...but she will also bruise easily on top of it. When we get them we both increase our iron levels and they go away. Guest guest Posted November 4, 2008 Report Share Posted November 4, 2008 I think it could be a vitamin or mineral deficiency too. I would get him on a good whole food supplement. The only one I found for kids is Yummi Bears kind. Everyone who tried them loves them! I'm not sure if they have minerals, so I would pair it with good multi-vitamin too. For years we thought it was from fruit juice or acid in his stomach (acid reflux). Then I thought it was from asthma inhalers. His get as big as quarters and he has SCARS on the inside of his mouth from some of these things. About a year ago, we asked the dentist about it because he was getting so many. I thought it was stress - our 3yo twins are ASD. The dentist said, " no, it most likely is a lutein deficiency OR it could be zinc. " So...I started giving him lutein directly and a good multivitamin with high zinc. He hasn't had one in SIX months! The dentist also told me that he (or any other dentist) can burn/pop these things with a lazer and they will NOT come back in the same spot. We haven't done it that way, but he said it doesn't hurt. At my house, these were sometimes caused by viruses, and lysine eliminated them. And sometimes they were caused by foods, usually foods that required proper thyroid functioning, so I added selenium [this is what my kids needed for thyroid function] and that eliminated the problem.
