Guest guest
We are going to start an oral ALA round (our first) tomorrow. We are still not sure how to dose her at night - fruity juices vs. fruity semi-solids/slushes, since we are having trouble with dosing in liquids. My PDDdaughter, normal son and I (the latter two taste testers only for now) can take ALA when mixed with semi-solids with no problems - taste is fine and it goes down easily with apple sauce, fruit juice concentrate " slush " or berry sorbet. When mixed with juices that mask the flavor well, like purple grape juice, orange juice, etc. all three of us swallow, then a few seconds later feel almost like (mild) caustic fumes in the back of our throat and start coughing as if the throat is irritated/itchy/coughy, and takes a number of coughs to clear this irritation. This has happened with both Kirkman and Puritan's Pride ALA capsules (which I then open and split as I mix it into stuff) at doses that are appropriate - like 15 mg-25 mg, less if you consider they are being sipped and we start coughing before we've finished our juice. I don't see how I can make it even more concentrated (and not be gagging) or less, because my child does not take coaching that well and won't drink half a cup of juice 8x a day and at night on demand. Please help! I wonder if any others have this problem with ALA and have found ways to get around it if you dose at night - I don't hear anyone doing semisolids like apple sauce or sorbet - all the recent posts about night dosing focus on syringe and bottles and childlike sucking/nursing reflexes. Does a half-asleep child swallow semi-solids well, or is this of necessity something we will probably have to wake our daughter to avoid choking? I certainly don't want to try the liquid ALA if it means she is going to wake up coughing and gagging (which usually means frustration and screaming and is simply not sustainable for the long-term), yet I want her to take things without waking up too much and want to benefit from her instincting mouthing/ swallowing reflexes. ________________________________________________________________________ AOL now offers free email to everyone.
