Hi Deborah,

has just recently taken to removing her helmet as well. She just gets

ahold of both sides and pulls till it comes off!! It isn't really loose, but

she has gotten very wise in the last few weeks and has it all figured out.

Fortunately we only have about 2-4 weeks left in our helmet so hopefully it

won't become a huge issue. Amy (Max's Mom) has had some big issues in trying

to keep her son's band on. She may be able to offer some insight if it

becomes a more serious issue!

Thank you for the intro. It's nice to know people's backgrounds and where

they are from. I love your son's name - that was the name I was going to use

if had been a boy! :-) (What is his middle name?)

Welcome officially!

Marci (Mom to )

History:

I think you have seen me post a few times, but I am new to the group

and would like to introduce myself and my son Noah. I am a single

mother living in San Francisco and Noah was born 10/6/00 3 weeks

early. He is now 5 1/2 months old. He has been really healthy, but

I noticed an increasing flat spot on the right side of his head and a

basically " weird " looking head (and no soft spots). My pediatrician

at 2 months said to just move him around and at 4 months he said to

wait and we could do surgery around 10-12 months if his head was

still misshaped. This didn't sound right to me, so I checked around

and found a children's hospital an hour away that has a cranio-facial

clinic twice a month. I went there and they ruled out synotosis, but

referred me to a orthotist for a helmut...(and I am gettin a new

pediatrician!)

First 36 hours:

Noah has adapted easily to his helmut and I didn't see any red spots

during the first day. I decided to let him wear it last night while

he slept (he sleeps through from 10-7)and everything seemed normal.

BUT, when I went into his room this morning...the helmut was off his

head! It doesn't seem loose, so I will see how it goes tonight. If

it comes off again, then I will call the orthotist. But so far, so

good.

I hope to report back some progress (and probably more questions)

soon.

I'm glad this group is here.

I wish I could offer some advice for keeping the band on. from what i

understand, it should get harder and harder to get out of...Max can still

pull his off, but it is much harder and sometimes he quits before it is off.

Ignoring him was definately the best advice that I had gotten. He took it

off and I would not show any attention. I would just pick it up and put it

to the side for a few minutes and then put it back on, while handing him a

toy to distract him. He is getting better, now he usually only does it when

he is eating because he loves to play with his hair when there is food on his

fingers (of course).

Good luck and I know frustrating it is, Believe me!

Hi Deborah,

Im in Menlo Park so pretty close to you. Where did you get Noah's

helmet from? My daughter Hope has an appt to be fitted for a helmet

in two weeks' time from Stanford hospital. Ive been told it is

similar to the Starband. Hope is 4 months old and is a twin - her

brother has a slight flattening, but not much, so we are hoping he

will be OK without a helmet.

I hope tonight goes better with the helmet. Ive heard it can take a

little time for them to get used to it during the night, but Im sure

he will be fine.

Good luck.

Hello. My name is Chris. My son Tyler just finished his treatment at

Stanford. We really liked the Drs, and the orthotists at CIRS, Palo

Alto. We didn't have a Starband, rather their own helmet, but very

similar. They just switched. If you have questions... I guess there

are a bunch of us Bay Area moms!
