Amy:

I can't believe it! Remember when Hanna had her droopy eye for a day? Well, Horner's syndrome was the first thing her doctor looked for!! I'm so sorry, I suppose I should have mentioned this to you, but since it was the first thing our ped looked at, I thought that would have probably already been ruled out for Max!

Keep us posted, and please keep your chin up. At least you now know that you can get his eye fixed up, at least some, in the future. :o)

Subject: Max's visit (long)

First of all let me thank everybody for their support - I always appreciate it.I must tell you that I really liked the doctor, he seemed very knowledgeable(sp?) and generally concerned about Max's eyes. What he said was: though it is a form of Ptosis, he does not think it is Congenital Ptosis - he believes that it is a Neurogenic Ptosis - possibly caused by the compression of the nerve by the orbit. He was 99% sure that Max had something called Horner's Syndrome (sp?) but said that he lacks one(just one!) of the symptoms. He checked for that particular symptom at least a dozen times because he was so sure that's what it was. He took about 25 pictures of Max and said that he will be "presenting" Max's eyes at a conference next week? As far as it getting worse - Ptosis(any kind) can get worse with time and if it is a nerve than that would be why it looks good sometimes and bad other times. He said that Ptosis can cause Amblyopia(lazy eye), Astigmatism, blurry vision, etc...He recommended that Max be checked By the Opthomologist every 3 months. Unlike the Opthomologist, he does not think that the Orbital Stenosis is bad at all. He said mild. He does think that the Orbital Dystopia is moderate to severe but that can only be fixed with Orbital Advancement surgery. He said the only sure way to fix compression of the nerve is by Neurosurgery...NEVER!!!As far as cosmetic surgery to fix the eyelid, he would like (unless vision requires it) to wait until Max is school age - he said that is when the teasing usually starts and if we do it too soon, the asymmetry is sure to come back.So I am no better, no worse - I guess I can be happy that Max can have the lid surgically corrected some day and he did reassure me that he can make it look close to symmetric with the other side. Unfortunatly, I feel like I am still waiting around watching it getting worse and he did say that it may continue to look worse. He said that with a Congenital Ptosis if the baby looks down, the lid stays in place and when Max looks down, his eye closes - that is also why he thinks it is the nerve.OK - I am done babbling - I just wanted everyone to know how it went...bear with me I will most certainly shed a few more tears over this. Thanks

Amy,

Thank you for the update - I know it must have been very hard to put all of

that into words. I am glad that you felt comfortable with the doctor and felt

that he was knowledgable and concerned.

I sure am sorry that they couldn't be a little more conclusive, but it is

very good that he says he can fix the eyelid and that he didn't think the

orbital stenosis was all that bad. So, a little ray of light at least!

I'll be sending good vibes your way Amy - I know you will get through with

flying colors - we mommies and daddies are a VERY tough breed! :-)

Ditto Amy - I hope you feel at least a little reassured about Max. I

was looking at your photos of him. He is sooo cute - what a pair of

cheeks you have there :-)

Good luck,

Kimberley
