Hi - there was a time that the Neurosurgeon and pediatrician told me that he

thought it was not going to help and the ped called it " torture " - but thanks

to the knowledge and support that I was provided by the people in this group

I was able to get a script (simply by insisting for one) and give it a try.

It is NOT torture!!!!!!! Torture will be having to live with the fact that a

doctor told you not to help your baby when there is indeed help out there. If

you have to see another doctor do it.

My doctor said to me, I don't think the band will help him, he is too old.

I'm afraid " what you see is what you get "

Look at some of my old posts #'s 11396 (this is the same doctor that gave me

the script), 11441 and 11536.

I didn't know where to turn - I know it sounds crazy and you expect a doctor

to guide you in the right direction but sometimes you have to tell them what

you want. I learned it myself. He made me feel like it was the wrong thing

to do but I went home, cried and the next day I called him and said " I want

to try " ..and he just said " ok, you never know " And of course is supportive

now!

Please don't throw in the towel unless you are comfortable with what the

doctor has told you...most of us have been there.

Sorry that you are going through this and If you need to anything, please ask.

I sure hope the dr didn't use the word " torture " ! Helmet/band therapy does

not " torture " babies. They may not enjoy the casting process, but it does not

harm them physically. They may need a little time to adjust to the

helmet/band, but again it doesn't hurt them, it is just something different

to adjust to.

I just wanted to clarify that for those in the group that are just getting

started. Going through the band/helmet therapy is not a form of " torture " for

you baby. In fact, quite the opposite. Treating the plagio with the

band/helmet saves them from other possible health problems that could result

from untreated plagio. It could also help save them from teasing and torment

from other children as they get older. I would also say that it is a far

better alternative then neurosurgery which was the only option available

before the helmets/bands were introduced!

So, not to worry if you are just getting started - your baby will be just

fine. There are many of us here whose babies end up actually liking their

helmet/band and wanting it on! likes her helmet and brings it to me to

put it on her after I've cleaned it!

> Did he really say torture? Why did he feel it was torture?

Beck,

This is incomprehensible to me. Because we're not so far from

Baltimore, I considered seeing this doctor but decided not to when I

heard that this doctor and his department do not recommend helmet

therapy. I can respect that there's a medically-based disagreement

about treatment, but what really bugs me is his implication that kids

in helmets are being tortured. My son is not being tortured by his

helmet, and I'm sure all parents here are completely confident that

helmet/band therapy is not harming their kids in any way.

Grrr.

Good morning, all.

Hanna was her usual happy self all thru treatment. If you ask me, a happy baby does not feel tortured! :o)
