I look for something that says " no mercury, pcb's,lead. " Looking at my

bottle of fish oil here - it is Spectrum Essentials & the message is in

the form of a little red circle on the front. Unsure if this is

standard labeling or not - there are only two brands to choose from at

the local stores I go to...

From what I remember, the oil that I didn't like, said something

like " meets or exceeds gov't standards for purity. " (not good enough,

imo) I do spend more to get the Spectrum, but consider it worth it -

the " other " stuff gave my 3yo a 2 week migraine....

Omega 3s are not cheap, but this is one area where I say to go with the

more respected brands and not simply an attempt to save $$$. Between

rancid oils and contaminated oils (toxins), you'll actually waste money

by going with cheap brands (not always). Liquid is probably always

more cost effective than capsules. I'd say avoid the more processed

oils like chewable tablets.

Spectrum Naturals is good. I use Nordic Naturals now so I don't know

the cost of other brands. Avoid generics like Walmart or Walgreens

labels. If you are in a store, check the bottle for packaging dates

(fresher the better). Nature's Way, Solgar, Source Naturals, Carlsons,

Solaray and Barleans are all other brands with positive

recommendations. Some like TwinLab, but that is the brand that twice

gave me rancid oils. I've tried Carlsons, Eskimo Kids and Nordic

Naturals, too. Liked them all.

Barleans is also an excellent source for Omega 6 oils (I use their flax

and borage). The only Omega 6 I ever recommend (unless there is a

documented need) is GLA. That is found in borage oil. Often it is

added to Omega 3 blends, but check the labels. GLA is said to be an

anti-inflammatory. Your son probably gets plenty (too much) Omega 6 in

his diet as it is. Avoid it, for the most part. Spectrum Naturals

also has good Omega 6 (borage and primrose). I usually avoid the

bottles that say Omega 3-6-9 blend since I found they often contain

little Omega 3 compared to other blends.

You might also check the labels to see how much of each EFA you are

getting per capsule. Dime for dime, high quality brands might give you

close to as much as bargain brands. Same with liquids.

Does Kirkmans have an Omega 3 blend? I like the higher EPA vs DHA for

mood swings. I'd shoot for 1 gram/day of these oils (together)... you

can work up to that.

2500 IU/day of A is not excessive.

Way too much information, I know. I hope this helps a little.

I would use Nordic Naturals, they are the most clean. If I could not get NN, I

would use Green Pastures and if I could not get that I would use Carlson's. It

just makes sense to me to use the one with the least mercury if you can get it.

NN has come down in price and if you go to http://www.luckyvitamin.com you can

purchase NN for about $16 a bottle, less if you buy in bulk.

Are there any brands you would stay away from? Thanks.

<<<This is person specific. We get better results with higher DHA so you have

to experiment a bit. It is said that the kids who lean more toward ADHD need

higher DHA and the kids who lean more toward ASD and/or Apraxia benefit more

from higher EPA. That proved true here but no idea how this would play out with

other kids.

I used to use Nordic Naturals and it is a great product but the fishy

smell my daughter would have for hours (yuk) So I switched to Coramega

(sold by Kirkman labs website) and I confirmed with the company that

it is 3rd party safety tested and mercury free. Tastes great like an

orange creamcycle and no more fishy smell!

Any one has list of places to purchase vitamins and

compare prices? Would really appreciate it

I find it (NN) less fishy smelling than other brands I've used. Even

the liquid ProEFA sitting in my fridge for 8 weeks (opened) didn't

smell fishy when I found it again. BUT, if I get some on my fingers

and don't wash them well, my fingers will have a slight fishy smell.

I like it.

Yes, my daughter would have a smell on her breath that was not

pleasant with the NN Ultimate Omega. The NN itself had a strong odor

but not the Coramega. That is what I meant. It was not rancid--it

was every bottle I bought from several different sources over a 2

year period.
