Guest guest
Aww, sorry, Sheresa same thing happened here, couldn't you just scream? The T3 total and T-3 Uptake mean nothing, says Andy. It is only the Free T3 that measures the exact thyroid hormone that deals with brain development. Your dr will probably deny that, ours tried to, after he tried to deny that the reference ranges from the lab were not correct. Her TSH is high, anything over 2 is suspect for hypothyroidism, the Free T4 looks good but you really need that Free T3. Ours had a low TSH of 1.1 and a nice Free T4 of 1.4, but her Free T3 was just a quart low at 3.3 and this is after plenty of protein and supplementation with selenium and iodine. Some people/drs will only look at the TSH, big mistake as just a little bit of Armour here took care of a whole host of problems and it just continued to get better and better with treatment. And if you just went by her TSH she would not have treated, at all. [ ] Please help with Thyroid/metabolic panel test results My daughters doctor called last night saying that her thyroid test came back normal. She had assured me at the time of the draw that they always test free T3, free T4, TSH. When I picked up the report today I find that there is NO FREE T3 on it, just total T3. Before I call her back on this I would like to know what is the significance of the free T3? The results are as follows and any thoughts from you thyroid experts out there would be welcome. I'm not completely satisfied with the test, and am furious because it was a sheer toture session for my daughter (endless digging for blood in both arms, then having to resort to hand vein just to get the blood out), it was horrible. T3, TOTAL 128 - (Ref range 127-221) T-3 Uptake 31 - (Ref range 22-35) T-4, Free 1.5 - (Ref range .9 - 1.6) T-4 (Thyroxine) TOTAL 10 - (Ref range 4.5 - 12.5) Free T4 Index (T7) 3.1 - (Ref range 1.4 - 3.8) TSH 2.9 - (Ref range .70 - 6.40) Antibodies <20 - (Ref range <20) She also ran a comprehensive metabolic panel. The following elements were out of range and I'm wondering if anyone knows the significance of these? Creatinine .4 - (Ref range .5 - 1.2) Bun/Creatinine Ratio 43 - (Ref range 6 - 25) Albumin/Globulin Ratio 2.2 - (Ref range .8 - 2.0) Thanks for any help. Sheresa, I'm not a thyroid labs expert so I'm no help with that but I can really commiserate with that lab crap! The last time I took n in for a big draw, the lab lost all of it and wouldn't admit we'd ever been there. Three times I have asked for free T3 and free T4 for myself, I see the doc write it, the lab doesn't do it. I also had blood drawn for a plasma cysteine test that somehow came back " lab error " . It's not that I'm dealing with one lab that stinks, it's multiple labs! Anyway, feeling for you... Nell

This all comes on the same day that I find out our insurance is now rejecting her speech claims on the basis of no medical necessity. Sure, this same insurance company paid her speech claims all of last year only to come back now and say that those were all paid in error. My goodness, is there no justice at all for these kids!! Is a specialist more appropriate to deal with this than a regular ped? I've put in a call about this, but I'm not sure what good it will do considering that she told me over the phone that the test was fine. > Her TSH is high, anything over 2 is suspect for hypothyroidism, Where does this information come from so I can bring this up too? I plan to continue pursuing this as I just have this gut feeling that she does have low thyroid and could benefit from treatment. Thanks so much for your help, . Guest guest
Sheresa, I agree with . TSH over 2.0 would send me straight to Armour. I know you can order it from offshore somewhere. I did it once when I couldn't get our Dr. on board with respect to the amount we needed. I looked for my source the other night for someone else but couldn't find it. I will look again. It really wasn't that expensive, especially if you buy the higher dose stuff and split the pills yourself. Andy says that full replacement for my son when we started was 1-1.25 grains. He was 3.5 years old then, though we seemed to need more than what Andy called for. Anyway, this is one of those things where I would go offshore if you can't get your doc to do what you need him/her to do. Just my .02. Guest guest
Thanks Ann - yes I would appreciate having that information if you can find it, just in case I can't get help thru the doctor. I'm feeling more and more certain that she does need thyroid support, based on everything that I have already read. I'm going to do some googling tonight on Free T3, but both you and state that TSH over 2 indicates a need for Armour. What is the source of this information? Maybe if I could show that to her she would agree to a trial of Armour, given our test results and my daughters symptoms. Guest guest
I probably got the TSH information from the naturalthyroidhormone group, or www.stopthethyroidmadness.com. Not sure. I do know one mom here in Indiana who said that her doc routinely Rxs Armour for when TSH is that high. As for the offshore supply, I will look again. I know it is here somewhere. Guest guest
Well, I said that the TSH being over 2 is " suspicious " and I might be conservative, but I would be hesitant to give the Armour without getting the Free T3 numbers as the start up for the Armour is no picnic and if I hadn't have been absolutely sure she needed it, I would have given up. My advice is to find someone to get this done...you will anyway as the amount you give has to be monitored as you go along anyway. Guest guest
I agree with that you should get the Free T3 test done. That said, I suspect that your daughter will do well with some Armour, however little that may be. I reacted so strongly to your post because Armour has had a very big impact here and is a very important intervention for those who need it (me included, though I haven't gotten myself an Rx yet). I do believe that Andy says it is better for kids to be a bit hyper than hypo. Anne > > > > > > Aww, sorry, Sheresa same thing happened here, couldn't you just > > scream? Guest guest
Oh I fully intend on getting the free T3 done, but after doing a lot more reading on many sites this evening I too am very suspicious of the 2.9 TSH, along with all of her symptoms. Thanks to you both, Anne and for all of your help. I really appreciate it. Sheresa > > > > > > > > Aww, sorry, Sheresa same thing happened here, couldn't you > just > > > scream? Guest guest
Cold hand/feet, slightly low body temperature (always 97ish), low energy, low strength, difficulty with concentration (despite acute knowledge of what she is trying to concentrate on), never sweats - even on a hot muggy day, weepy at times for no reason, can't poop without magnesium/prune juice. Her body size is totally average for her age, but she doesn't eat much at all. She also wakes up virtually every night at 1 or 2 am and many times cannot get back to sleep for hours (restless tossing). The ACE has helped somewhat with the sleep but not completely. How old is your child? Your pediatrician needs to find out the ref. ranges and not based his dx on the lab ranges. If you go again to have free T3 done, I suggest you also check iodine. Actually, I cannot remember, iodine might even be urine, not blood. My son's thyroid symptoms were caused by a lack of iodine. Once I changed our table salt, his symtoms really improved. > She also ran a comprehensive metabolic panel. Guest guest
might be right, there are no antibodies reported here and increasing selenium and iodine might help raise the Free T3 if low and lower the TSH to acceptable ranges. I would give it a couple of months, though, and then move on to Armour. We had tried the extra supplements for about 6 months before our testing to no avail. Guest guest
Yes sound hypothyroid to me. We had cold hands/feet from birth, low body temps, concentration issues and horrible appetite....all resolved with Armour. Guest guest
Hi Thanks for your reply. My daughter is 5. I have spent the morning pouring over all this and her doc was very cooperative at getting the free T3, I think she expected it to be included in the first run, but not sure if she recognizes the significance of it. So I think she is basically willing to be on board with all of this, but my next potential obstacle will be finding the correct ref ranges. Does anyone know where to get the correct ref range info for children for the free T3, free T4, TSH? As for the iodine and selenium, she gets both of these on a daily basis for the past year or so. 50 mcg iodine (which may be too low) and app 80 mcg selenium. Guest guest
Thanks for this Anne - Interesting that the ranges listed here for TSH still appear to be pretty high compared to a lot of talk out there about 2.0 and 3.0 being suspicous. Even at the stopthethyroidmadness site on the childrens forum it is mentioned over and over that anything over 2 is suspicous. I guess I'll just wait for the T3 results and go from there.
