Guest guest
Molly, I know many may not test kidney and liver functions regularly, but we do a CBC and CMP every 3 months with my son. I ask the doctor to write a standing order for the blood work, so all I have to do is call the lab and let them know when we are coming. We don't have to wait or anything. We also did a hair test every 6 months when we began chelating, but I am doing one yearly now. Guest guest
Molly, Dr. Usman recommended initial CBC and Metabolic panels after the first 6 rounds of DMSA to check liver and kidney functions. After that, then every 3 months. When my son's first 3 sets of labs came back very much in the normal range, I talked to her about running labs every 6-9 months. She was OK with 6 months in our case. I would prefer annually, or when chelators are switched or protocols are significantly altered (doses greatly increased?). I ran this by Andy 2 years ago. At that time, he agreed that frequent labs were unnecessary since my son didn't show problems in the first 3 sets of tests (7 month time span). I think he said even after the first labs at round 6 I could have/should have relaxed. I can't recall exactly, but labwork isn't one of Andy's protocol 'must haves'. If you are truly following Andy's protocol, the risk of liver/kidney malfunction is pretty darned low unless function was compromised before you even began (and then you can't really blame it soley on the chelator). I think DAN! docs want testing every 2-4 months. Overkill, in my opinion. Good luck! How is it going so far? Guest guest
Thank you Pam and Jackie for responding! We see Dr. Usman too, so I'm assuming it's the same. I just couldn't remember when she wanted me to do the first labs. It is going really well so far. I'm so happy that I found this group and am doing Andy's protocal. She gave us 25 mg capsules and we are splitting them into 3 and dosing that way (he weighs 36 pounds). Lots of new sounds since we started (he is non-verbal) and tongue movement. I think he has had a bit of yeast kick up so she put us on 1/2 tsp. of Yeast Aid once a day, plus double probiotics. Not sure if that is helping yet, it seems to be, he is just a little itchy. When is the best time to add ALA? That is my next step right? Thanks again!! Guest guest
Molly, We added ALA after doing 4 rounds of DMSA alone.... Glad that you are getting new sounds etc.... that is wonderful to hear!!! Keep us posted! Jackie--- > Thank you Pam and Jackie for responding! > > We see Dr. Usman too, so I'm assuming it's the same. Guest guest
Do you already have the lab orders in your possession? Dr. Usman would write " after 6 rounds " on the top of mine so I would remember. I had ours drawn at a local lab (we live in WI). Really, unless your child has recent mercury exposure (vaccines, amalgam removal, accidental) you can start ALA now. It might be interesting to wait until after the first set of labs and after the first set of DDI urine toxic metals tests to see if he is dumping any metals with DMSA alone. I saw great surges when I added oral ALA to our protocol. I waited too long to add it; 9 months. I wish I had done it sooner. We just made the switch to oral DMSA from TD-DMSA and I'm going to re-add ALA after we do the first urine screen for metals next week. Good luck. Nice to hear you are seeing changes and good to hear you haven't noticed any signs of intolerance thus far.
