It seems that when there's lead in candy, it's from Mexico and

melamine and other toxins in foods, it's from China. It is a

concern. Where do you get your information on country of origin? We

shop at Whole Foods and often buy Cascadian Farms. Thanks in advance

if you have a resource.

You need to be careful. This is a good argument for supporting our

local organic growers.

I'll email Cascadian Farms. They are based in WA. I see some of their

organic frozen produce has 'product of Mexico' or Chile; but not all of

my bags say this... so perhaps it is a US product unless stamped

otherwise? That would be good to know.

My frozen broccoli is from Mexico. I'm disappointed.

Thanks for the heads-up. I was just talking to a friend about his

imported food issue yesterday. Seems Kraft is getting some of their

milk protein from China (Mac n Cheese): for some reason I thought my

organics would be different.

I have noticed that Whole Foods Organic frozen broccoli is from China.

And Cascadian Farms Organic frozen broccoli is from Mexico. It seems

for a lot of fresh organic produce, the country of origin is not

displayed in the store (such as Whole Foods).

<<<This would concern me. In some countries the word " organic " takes on a

whole new meaning.

Given China's obvious food safety issues, what about organics

originating in China? Are they safe? What about organic produce from

Mexico?

Thanks.

On Cascadian Farms, it is stamped on the bag. On Whole Foods

Organic, it is included in the print. Additionally, I forgot to

mention before that Trader Joes Organic Broccoli also is a product of

China.

I was wondering if it is required to meet US organic standards,

because it is sold in the US?

I had a bad reaction to " organic " oranges I bought from Wal-mart that were

from Mexico. I've also seen more and more organic foods at Whole Foods coming

from other countries and it's of concern.

Its all in the monitoring. If the US doesn't regularly inspect each

and every supplier...

You are right, the bags still do say they meet USDA organic

requirements ( " certified organic " ) regardless of the produce origin.

I'm floored that our country can't meet its own need for broccoli.

My uncle is retired now but worked for our state health department for 40

years. When he retired he was chief food safety inspector for the state. He

told me never buy anything grown or made in China or Chile.

Never trust organic that is not grown in the US.  Other countries don't have

the laws in place and use all kinds of pesticides.  Only US Certified

Organically grown follow strict guidelines.

I've been thinking about this for a few days. What if the US company

owns the farm in the non-US country and merely employs the workers?

Do they have to comply to US standards?

I don't know how this works in agriculture, but I know lots of US non-

agriculture companies build/run their own plants overseas.

I'm still waiting for my reply from Cascadian Farms about their

products. I'd like to think these organic companies are better than

other food companies... but I know many are all owned by big

companies now.
