Porphyrins Test

Hi

Our porphyrin didn't take too long but I tend to phone them to chase

it along. We have another test to do but we are doing it on Monday

so that the urine doesn't go off - not sure if this is right but to

be on the safe side.

Peta,

thanks very much for your reply. Yes I agree its best to be safe.

However I'm a bit short on time so am going to try posting on a

Friday. If the results are messed up I'll post back and tell others

not to post over a weekend. Thanks again.

.

P.S. Really sorry to hear about your gp problems. Maybe someone here

with more experience can give you some advice.

Someone on another group posted and said that there was a preservative in the porphyrin tube and that the sample was good for two weeks, per the French lab. As long as you completely cover the sample with the foil provided with the sample.

Good to know, if this is true for those of us mailing from the US, not killing you for the postage to get it there in two days. Someone could email the lab to verify this.

Thanks, , I didn't get quite how to do this, either. Along with a math/science deficit, I have limited mechanical abilities, noone ever called "me" a nerd, that's for sure :-)

Re: Porphyrins Test

The test tube has a vacuum. You put the straw looking end of the apparatus into the urine as soon as you get the specimen!!! Puncture the test tube with the needle, i.e. you stick the yellow end of the test tube into the yellow end of the straw apparatus; that dark area that you can see at the end of the test tube is rubber and easy to puncture with the needle that is in the yellow end of the 'straw.' The tube will 'suck up' the correct amount of urine in just a few seconds. When the tube quits sucking, remove it from the needle, tilt a few times gently to mix with the preservative. wrap immediately in foil[i used a double wrap as this is a light and air sensitive specimen.] Make sense? >> Hey All, > > I received the following email from a friend, and was wondering if any > of you have any experience with this and can answer her question? Does anyone have any thoughts on doing the Porphyrins Test at GPL vs

Labcore? Please advise...

Labcore does not seem to have the amber plastic urine containers

available and has to special order them. They will NOT do the test w/o

the amber container. Atleast that is what they have told me.

TIA,

We used labcorp for our test because our insurance pays 100% of all labcorp

tests (so far anyway). Dr. Geier said if we can collect the urine and then ask

for a dark test tube (that is used for blood) that would be fine. When we

transported it from our house to the lab, we covered the container in foil and

put it in a dark bag. I feel your frustration! We had to wait over 2 months to

try and get labcorp to order a dark urine container.
