Guest guest
Have you figured out why he takes them off? Are they too tight? Do his feet sweat? Does he take off both shoes and socks or just shoes? Does he take off every pair of shoes or just certain ones? Does he need tactile input to his feet? Does he like the cold floor or feel of carpet or whatever surface? Consider massaging his feet at times when it is appropriate for his to have his shoes off, i.e. bedtime and see if that seems to help. Try different textures against his feet and see if you can figure out what he prefers. S S
Hi Everyone,

I need some ideas pleeeeease!!! Salvatore loves to take off his shoes. Guest guest
My daughter does this too... She can't stand wearing shoes and socks and this is a constant battle for us. For her it is the tactile input she needs.. She is a lot more clumsy when she wears shoes.... Try giving him deep pressure to his feet.... Using your thumb press down and hold for 3-4 seconds... This helps us and we do it before bed so it really relaxes her.. In fact we do deep pressure all over and it calms her and gets her ready to sleep..... Guest guest
I also prefer to go barefoot and like/need deep pressure. In the summer I wear my Birkenstock massage sandals (my husband calls them torture shoes) and in the winter I have massage insoles that I move from my shoes to boots or I wear clogs so I can kick them off under my desk at work. I don't remember the brand of the insoles or where I got them but here's a link to the sandals. Unfortunately, I don't think they make the sandals in children's sizes, but the insoles could be cut down to fit. http://catalog.birkenstockcentral.com/vc3bc/partnumber/^5671$/template-b// There are warnings to wear the sandals only 5 minutes per day at first and gradually increase. I wear mine all summer though my feet are usually sore the first few times each summer until I get used to them again. The insoles I have can be worn with the nubs down at first and then with them up as the person gets used to them. Guest guest
I dont know why he takes them off. They arent tight on him. Sometimes it seems like its just something for him to do when he's standing around doing nothing (like waiting on a grocery line, for instance). He ruins his sneakers always. I should own stock in Payless or Target!!! At home in the last few weeks he will remove his socks. He plays with them. He will put them on and then take them off.... I just bought him high top boots/sneakers and they have a heavier sole. He hates them because they are higher. Yesterday in school they said he took his shoes off less and feel he might need some input through his feet. I will try the massage to his feet tonight for him and see if that helps. Thanks!!! Guest guest
We, too, have this problem. He wears hiking boots, but still kicks them off. I am thinking about buying Converse All-Star High Tops backetball shoes. --- casti71@... wrote: > Yeah, he slips them off. The laces stay tied. Guest guest
>He still takes them off though, everyday, when he is not supposed to. Is a school rule or something? Can you find him some shoes (slippers maybe?) that will satisfy the rule but be comfortable enough for him not to mind wearing them? It sounds like they're hurting his feet. Guest guest
This could be a sensory issue as well. Use the brushing technique on his feet and ankles. May take a bit of time but was quite effective for many. Amy lanellici <lanellici@...> wrote: >He still takes them off though, everyday, when he is not supposed to. Is a school rule or something? Guest guest
wow, im glad to know im not the only one. my son also does this. he does it as an act of defiance sometimes when he is waiting and doesnt want to. BUT there is also the side where he hates heavier shoes and walks a little less coordinated with shoes on. we went through the whole thing of buying lighter shoes, different size tops, and slippers. now that he has come accustomed to them, he doesnt walk funny in them anymore but he still takes them off if he is made to wait. he doesnt untie his either. they are definately tricky little magicians. casti71@... wrote: Yeah, he slips them off. Guest guest
Well, when we had this issue we just made sure that each time he took the shoes off inappropriately, we put them back on him right away. And praised him like crazy when he had them on. But at the same time I also stepped up my sensory therapies at home, which only means that I continued to encourage him to walk barefoot in the house and in the backyard. I taught him that it was OK to be without shoes at these places but not on the sidewalk or the playground. My son's school also stepped up his daily excercise, meaning he walked around with his teacher every 30 minutes or so just to move a bit. He also toawalked at the time so we really weren't kidding around with this. The school agreed to allow my son to take his shoes off in order for him to be able to feel his feet a bit, then put shoes back on. This seemed to work in a few weeks time!! We also were treating gut bugs and yeast at the same time. I think that the combination of these therapies helped totally eliminate the issue of not keeping shoes on or walking funny. > >
Hi Everyone,
>
> I need some ideas pleeeeease!!! Guest guest
I hate shoes. I've hated them my whole life. My toes don't spread out as much as they could, even in most wide shoes, so my balance is severely compromised. It doesn't help I have high and wide arches at that - so I've never gotten the proper support from shoes. (The narrow ones pinch and the wide ones flatten my feet.) I find the balance thing isn't really noticeable unless I'm standing mostly still. I use Earth brand shoes, but they're expensive for growing feet. I've heard a lot from my chiropractor about how Converse also has a very wide toe box, but I find the converse brand uncomfortable because of my arches. -Lana On 1/23/07, casti71@... <casti71@...> wrote: > > Hi Everyone, > > I need some ideas pleeeeease!!! Guest guest
Haha, my son, Luke (3.5 y/o) just learned how to take his shoes off! They taught him in school and now we can't keep his shoes on. Oddly enough, I just had a thought about this yesterday. My Mom gave Luke a pair of Converse All Stars (hightops) for Christmas, which for some reason were sitting on the table, (we won't get into that!) Anyway, I remember looking at them and thinking how he won't be able to slip off those suckers! He has poor dexterity, so if I double knot them he won't be able to get them off. I think it might work, I also like the Cons because they are so flexible and light weight. See, and my Mom just thought she was giving a " cool " gift! Good Luck, Kim
