Guest guest
I've been reading the posts about HBOT with interest and would like to know how many other DANs or parents out there are using an alternative therapy. On the recommendation of my 6-yr old daughter's DAN doctor, my daughter had an encephaloscan which revealed that one part of her brain is very poorly oxygened (have others done an encephaloscan?). The Dr prescribes encephaloscans for all her autistic patients and she says that often results for severely autistic kids show that several parts of the brain are very poorly oxygenated. She is very pro-HBOT and thinks that oxygenation is key in helping kids with poorly oxygened brains. Since there is no HBOT available where we live, she has prescribed alternative medication to augment oxygenation: one is Tanakan (active ing. Gingko Biloba, which dilates blood vessels) and Hydergine, which increases blood flow to the brain. Both drugs are commonly used to treat dementia and other cognitive problems in the aged but she regularly prescribes it for kids whose brains show poor oxygenation. The treatment is prescribed for 3 months (along with osteopathy to help with circulation in neck arteries, which are problematic) after which time I presume we'll do another encephaloscan to see about improvements. My daughter has been taking this medication for about 4 weeks now with a few other supplements and we have noticed real improvements in her moods, behaviour and ability to reason. She is still affected by food intolerances and/or gut problems, which I haven't completely figured out yet, but as I eliminate suspected foods, she sure has days when she is on the ball. She hasn't started any enzymes yet since Houstons products are on back order so enzymes are not contributing to the positives for now. I'm wondering if people can comment on the therapy. I read a recent past discussion on it & it seems that its not very common at least in the US (I'm in France). I read the concerns about HBOT causing seizures in some kids and am wondering if this alternative could also have the same side effect? On a few French websites, I did read cautions that said that prolonged treatments had to be well followed by a doctor. One site also said that one should not stop the medication without a doctor's approval so I'm wondering about long-term effects and other negatives. I doesn't appear to be used much on kids and I'm uneasy about my daughter being a guinea pig! Any comments are welcome since the DAN is on holidays now til early September. Thanks,
Guest guest
, Can you tell us what dosage of each your daughter is taking?? Does you doctor believe that this 3 month treatment will cause permanent improvements? Thanks, [ ] Alternatives to HBOT (Andy, your comments?) Guest guest
Hi , The doses are: Tanakan: 1 ml 3 times daily Hydergine: 10 drops (0.5 ml) 3 times/day before meals I give both together with other supplements mixed in a little juice before meals. Come to think of it now, the prescription does not say that both should be taken together but the doctor didn't specify to take them separately. She said this therapy is a substitute for HBOT and like HBOT it " could " have permanent benefits. But from what I understood from her, bottom line is that poor oxygenation is linked to the big toxic picture and once we get rid of the metals, everything else will improve. She wants to start chelating in October and I don't know if she usually keeps this therapy going during chelation but I'll ask around here to her other patients. > > > , > > > > Can you tell us what dosage of each your daughter is taking?? Guest guest
She's 6 and weighs 18 kg. I've asked around here but have no answers yet as to whether this dosage is appropriate for an 18 kg child. But as I said before, we've noted many improvements so far and the only negatives are, I believe, attributed to food reactions. I got my Houstons enzymes today, so will note her progress over the next week. I was hoping Andy would have a view on this since no one seems to have any information about the effects of this drug on children. I'll post here if I find out more. > > > > > > > > > , > > > > > > > > > > > > Can you tell us what dosage of each your daughter is taking?? > Does > > you doctor believe that this 3 month treatment will cause > permanent > > improvements? > > > > > > > > > > > > Thanks, > > > > > > > > > > > > > > >
Guest guest
That is really interesting. Just wondering why couldn't you just use a quality OTC ginko supplement instead of the Tanakan or is Ginko not OTC in France? Guest guest
Tanakan is not OTC here. I got a 3-month supply through state-reimbursed medical prescription, which is great given that its benefits with Hydergine are comparable to HBOT. On top of Tanakan, my daughter is also taking Neuroplus once/day, which contains 80 mg of gingko bilboa. I found info on the web that said the standard preparation of gingko bilboa is called EGb 761, which is indicated on the Tanakan ingredient list. But on Neuroplus, the ingredient listed is just gingko bilboa, 80 mg - I think these two ingredients are the same, since both refer a composition of " 24 percent ginkgo flavonoid glycosides, 6 percent terpene lactones " (actually, Neuroplus has 7% terpene). I don't know if there is a difference between the two types of gingko. Do they act the same way? Tanakan also contains orange and lemon essential oils and alcohol, which I don't believe is in EGb 761 so maybe this influences its absorption? I wish I'd studied pharmacology or medicine & could better understand this stuff! I heard from another parent here who is giving her 33 kg son 20 drops / 3 times daily. She is also noting positive results. My daughter's progress continues with no adverse effects. I'll keep you posted about any other news but in meantime would still appreciate more input about risks & benefits or others' experiences with this treatment. > > That is really interesting. Guest guest
It would be nice to know if there was a study done on this to determine if the ginko and hydrgine activate dormant neurons like HBOT supposedly does and what type of results would kids get if they took the ginko\hydregine along with HBOT? > > > > That is really interesting.
