We had no problem getting our insurance company to cover both bands. My son was born with plagio/tort and I think that can often make a difference.

Check out the data base. Many have their info in there for you to review!

Good luck!

--- We have Blue Cross and have not been successful so far. They say

it's cosmetic and our son has both plagio and tort. What insurance

company do you have?

We were denied preapproval by Cigna of FL, appealed once and were

denied again and were on a second level appeal. Concurrently my

husband's employer looked into it and I think that made the

difference cause they called last week to say Cigna had decided to

pay for the band. All I can say is if your insurance denys you, keep

appealing and file a grievance with your state insurance commission

as well. Wish you luck!!

We sent them two letters of medical necessity and they lost both of them....

One thing a lot of parents do, is to send EVERYTHING by certified mail. That way someone has to sign for it, and the proof is there that they have received it.

Subject: Paying for Helmet

Hi. I am new to this group. My son Henry has a mild case of plagiocephaly. We are about to embark on helmet therapy. My question is this: have any of you been successful in getting your insurance to pay for the helmet? Aside from being about to scream at the insurance company...We sent them two letters of medical necessity and they lost both of them....I am concerned that they won't pay for it. Is there anything anyone can recommend as far as this goes. It is a sizeable expense ($1400) and I would like to get it covered if at all possible. I wonder if anyone can offer advice. Also--how well tolerated is the helmet. My son is only 3 months old and I am worried that he will have a problem adapting to it and that it will be uncomfortable. Thanks in advance for your help. Welcome to the group - I'm glad you found us!

Unfortunately I have had no luck whatsoever convincing my insurance company

to pay. We have gone through all the levels of appeal and we have now filed a

complaint against them with our State Department of Health. (we have an HMO)

If that is unsuccessful we will probably take them to small claims court.

As far as adapting goes...with your baby being so young I just can't imagine

that he will have any trouble adapting. My daughter was 9 months old when she

got her helmet and has had absolutely no trouble at all!!

Keep us posted on your progress!!
