Guest guest
Lady Jane, I know this is hard but relax. Try to get the book Children with Starving Brains by J. McCandless. This book will help you navigate the biomedical approach to recovery for you son. Some sites that you may find of interest as well... www.greatplainslaboratory.com www.generationrescue.org www.danasview.com/org (I forget if she is org or com). Your son should be able to get special education services through your school system. IEP working on social skills would be beneficial. Autism Research Institute has a list of doctors who specialize in the Autism spectrum disorders. Help is here...but each child is different so you will be doing a lot of reading..it is important to find a doctor that will work with you... Guest guest
In response to the mother-in-law reaction, hang in there. My mother- in-law came around when she saw the dramatic difference in our son after we started diet changes and omega fatty acids. Prior to that, she told us we needed to get him around more kids (and he was around other children). After the improvements following diet changes, she told me she always thought something was wrong. LOL. But she has become a great supporter and helped me with ideas for cooking for our son. It will get better. Whether the diagnosis is accurate or not, look to the autism community for solutions to help your son feel better and get along better. Our family is so much healthier for it. Best wishes, > > hello i am new here and my son was just diagnosed as having aspergers > we went to one appt with the psychiatrist and he just looked at what > i had wrote talked to me and my son for a bit and said he has > it???????? he is 5 yrs old me and my hubby are very confused and > unsure if he has this or not we do realize he has a hard time with > having and keeping friends he sort of isolates himself in school from > the other kids and he has a really huge anger problem which he was > just put on risperdal for i guess im looking for more information on > this the dr just called it this and explained it wasnt affecting his > intelligence as he is a very smart kid but his social and mature > levels he didnt even inform me it was a type of autism i learned that > on the internet and through another lady whos son was diagnosed in > feb i have noticed what he does with his hands and it always reminded > me of a child with autism but he can talk to me so i never thought he > could have autism there needs to be more of an awareness of what this > is my mother-in-law wont listen she believes i am being ridiculous > and there is nothing wrong with her grandchild that he is a normal > kid i m not entirely sure the dr is correct but i do know something > isnt right i know my child and i know that he tries so hard to be > good and not hit and kick and bite and he feels so bad when he does > hes a loving kid always has been but he has these mood swings and > then he regrets what he did any info would help me thank you >

Guest guest
Something sounds fishy about this psychiatrist. I think you should consider getting a second opinion. And try testing for metals as well. In the files are articles on urinary porphyrin testing (involves sending urine samples through a simple process to a Paris lab. There's an American lab which just started testing for it: Great Plains Lab, I believe). And then, the preferred testing for this discussion group is the DDI hair test and " counting rules " which most people have done (also in files). Is this the psychiatrist who prescribed the Risperdal? If so, be aware that some psychiatrists will diagnose a child with anything if it justifies giving the child certain expensive drugs. They get kickback for it. Now that Risperdal has been approved for children with " ASD symptoms " (it appears they don't even have to be officially diagnosed- someone just subjectively feels they have " symptoms " ), I have a creepy feeling that many children will suddenly be misdiagnosed with spectrum disorders. Not to say that your son might now be injured by toxins and displaying some behaviors, but there's also a chance that he's not. Bear in mind that some gifted children throw enormous tantrums. Read some biographies of Einstein for example. Einstein used to throw things and scared off tutors before he was seven. Gifted kids also may have delayed social development and narrow interests. Again, I don't know your son but there are several different views to consider. If this psychiatrist did not prescribe the Risperdal and was meeting your boy for the first time, the Dr. may have been interpreting drug side effects for signs of the disorder. I've read several studies showing that Ritalin and certain other psychiatric drugs can cause " autistic-like " behaviors in some children, including repetitive, mechanical behavior and repetitive speech, reduction in eye contact, etc.. Go to www.breggin.com for breakdowns of some drug side effects. All the same, this doesn't mean your son may not have been effected by toxins, though. It's possible. Lead and mercury poisoning are very common, especially subclinical levels where the toxins sink deep into bones or brain or other organs and no longer shows in direct urine or blood tests. Lead and mercury poisoning can cause irritibility and autistic-like behaviors, like everyone here is saying. If you test for these metals and start reading up on chemical injuries, one thing many here will suggest is trying out the casein- free, gluten-free diet in the meantime to see what happens. You may not need the medications at all in order to reduce the tantrums or angry behavior- the medication may, in fact, get in the way of being able to see if the GF/CF diet is doing any good. It's your call. What many parents seem to be finding is that behavioral improvements in some children can be quite radical just from the restricted diet alone. There are a few theories on why the diet works which make sense. Mercury and other vaccine components are hypothesized to cause increased permeability in certain barrier membranes in the body, theoretically allowing unprocessed food proteins into the brain. The brain is not designed to metabolize whole proteins and will react badly. The casein from milk and gluten are converted into morphine- like substances in the brain, leading to " drugged " behavior, including the " drug addict's " angry-backlash as the brain and body develop tolerance to the morphinization. In support of this theory, thousands of parents have found that the diet works and researchers did find elevated levels of casomorphin (the morphine like substance from which casein is converted) and gliadorphin (morphine-like substance from which gluten is converted) in the cerebrospinal fluid of some kids in amounts which exceeded what the brain could have produced on its own. We never gave our kids cow's milk until they were two and a half. Immediately after we gave them milk and icecream, some autistic-like behaviors began in our son and our daughter's mood swings went through the roof. Our previously perfectly gentle son began to act out, too- kicking, scratching, etc. It was much too rapid a change to just be " the terrible twos " - he was miserable. We went GF/CF (Gluten-free/dairy-free) and they were better than ever. We believe their language delay was caused by vaccine-injury, but drinking milk pushed our son into ASD-like behavior. Putting them on GF/CF also " saved " them from extraneous diagnoses and their language development took off so fast that we were shocked. Our daughter most certainly would have been misdiagnosed with a slew of useless psychiatric labels had she continued consuming dairy (and to a lesser degree, gluten). Our son would have regressed terribly if it weren't for the diet. Now the " genes only " evaluators are telling us that our kids just have inherited language delays, not autism. We believe the truth is more in the middle: that sure they're bright and engaged, but they're also poisoned. I don't think that language delay or classic regressive autism are the only conditions which can benefit from GF/CF. It could work for the " version of mercury poisoning " currently labeled asperger's as well. Our kids' urinary porphyrin testing came back positive for mercury. We suspected that it was low level poisoning and this was confirmed. They also had one subclinical blood lead level which came back higher than we would have liked and we've considered that that lead is now in their brains and bones, along with some mercury. We're pursuing the idea of chelation very carefully. I wish you luck. > > > > hello i am new here and my son was just diagnosed as having > aspergers > > we went to one appt with the psychiatrist and he just looked at > what > > i had wrote talked to me and my son for a bit and said he has > > it???????? he is 5 yrs old > > *Did he recently have 5 year vaccines? Guest guest
Get a second opinion from an experienced PhD or MD. Where do you live? Are you willing to travel short distances to find a good fit? Your psychiatrist might still be right, but I think you should find a better evaluation.... IF you want a diagnosis. Pam > > hello i am new here and my son was just diagnosed as having aspergers > we went to one appt with the psychiatrist and he just looked at what > i had wrote talked to me and my son for a bit and said he has > it???????? he is 5 yrs old me and my hubby are very confused and > unsure if he has this or not we do realize he has a hard time with > having and keeping friends he sort of isolates himself in school from > the other kids and he has a really huge anger problem which he was > just put on risperdal for i guess im looking for more information on > this the dr just called it this and explained it wasnt affecting his > intelligence as he is a very smart kid but his social and mature > levels he didnt even inform me it was a type of autism i learned that > on the internet and through another lady whos son was diagnosed in > feb i have noticed what he does with his hands and it always reminded > me of a child with autism but he can talk to me so i never thought he > could have autism there needs to be more of an awareness of what this > is my mother-in-law wont listen she believes i am being ridiculous > and there is nothing wrong with her grandchild that he is a normal > kid i m not entirely sure the dr is correct but i do know something > isnt right i know my child and i know that he tries so hard to be > good and not hit and kick and bite and he feels so bad when he does > hes a loving kid always has been but he has these mood swings and > then he regrets what he did any info would help me thank you >

Guest guest
If he needs a one-on-one that should be written into his IEP. My brother and SIL had to get a lawyer involved to get what my nephew needed written into his IEP. If I were you, I would definitely try the GFCF diet. S S the school said if this doesnt get taken care of he will fall behind in 1st grade because he wont have one on one they wont do that in 1st grade yet he is in the talented and gifted class and extremely smart and i think that it would be unfair for him to fall behind i m going to talk to a dr about getting him tested for the things you told me about and the diets you are talking about it kinda makes sense that it could be something like that since he always gets sick when he eats ice cream or drinks milk and i do too thats why i assumed that it was just lactose intolerance thank you for all your responses definitely has helped Janie _______________________________________________ Join Excite! - http://www.excite.com The most personalized portal on the Web! Guest guest
It is very unlikely that your present mainstream doctors will help you with these issues. If your son is mercury poisoned, it could have been mercury from the very vaccines that they recommend, so they will not admit this nor encourage you to investigate this on your own. They may even lecture you angrily for even considering it. They are unlikely to know anything about GF/CF diet or its benefits. Again, since the recommendations for GF/CF came from the research community which made the connection between vaccine-injuries and food intolerances, your current doctors are unlikely to encourage you to pursue information on this. They will not order porphyrin testing or hair analysis. These tests look for indirect " biomarkers " of mercury and other toxic metals (antimony, arsenic, etc.). There's a pattern of minerals in hair and a pattern of enzymes in urine which are specific to certain types of poisoning, though the metals themselves- if present- may already be absorbed into organs, brain and bones. You can order these tests yourself in most states, though some require a doctor's referral. For this, you can go to doctor who specializes in vaccine injury or a " DAN " doctor. For a list, see the Generation Rescue website and check out referrals for your state or write to a " rescue angel " in your state. These doctors are expensive and often not covered by insurance, but it may be worth at least one visit to make sure you get the proper testing done. Be aware that some DAN doctors prescribe psychiatric medications. Some people agree with this practice, others question it. On this list, not everything that DAN doctors do or say is taken as religious edict. There are some disagreements with DAN protocols, though there are many areas of agreement, too. You'll still have to do all your own reading and question absolutely everything. Keep your own counsel, think for yourself after you've truly sorted through the best information available. No one in the world has your child's best interests at heart more than you. Read the book " Evidence of Harm " by Kirby. Autism is the tip of the iceberg as far as the range of damages and behavioral manifestations from vaccine-injuries. There can be very subtle effects as well that do not involve diminished IQ. The book gets into why you aren't being told this by the newspapers and regular doctors. He's in the talented and gifted class? Something's really, really wrong with what these doctors are doing to your child. There really should have been much more effort on the part of these doctors to rule out all possible medical causes for his behavior, plus environmental causes- including the emotional environment in his school. Also, the pressure the school is putting on you is disgusting. They should be trying to find what changes in the school environment may be hindering him. For this, read Dr. Breggin's book on the school system and overdiagnoses and drugging of kids: " Reclaiming Our Children " . This book doesn't really get into alternative medical treatments, though it does mention that subclinical lead poisoning can cause behavior difficulties in children, making the issue a *medical* issue, not a psychiatric issue (there's a big difference). And view the Null film: " The Drugging of Our Children " : http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-3609599239524875493 Again, I'm not saying there may not be an underlying issue of toxicity, but just to be sure that you're aware of all the different schools of thought on what could be going on with your child, you should know that gifted children are famously alienated in certain school settings and may only really relate to a very small percentage of their peers, can engage in particularly awful tantrums in childhood, may live in their own world, have their own special interests, etc. (see the movie " Little Man Tate " for an interesting view on the extremes of this). If you can afford it, consider private education like Waldorf. Most people can't afford schools like that, but sometimes Quaker schools are not as quick to try to diagnose children and may give more meaningful individualized attention. It really, really depends on the school and staff. Gifted kids can tend to be underacheivers as well: as they find little to relate to in the curriculum and among their peers, some find the pressure to perform perfectly so overwhelming to compensate for their dubious social position that they just give up. For a site giving an interesting overview of why some children can be emotionally unsettled, see the Wikipedia article on " Theory of Positive Disintegration " . Gifted children are reported to be consistently misdiagnosed with ADHD and other questionable fad disorders. Risperdal is a very dangerous and extreme drug for a five year old to be on. The attorneys general of nine states are now suing drug companies for bankrupting medicaid programs by peddling these drugs for use on children (to disastrous results in many cases), though many drug companies wiggled their way around the illegality of off- label promotion (previously, these drugs were not approved for use on children) by getting the drugs approved for use on children with ASD symptoms, as I mentioned previously. There have been enormous class action suits against the makers of Risperdal and Zyprexa (same class of drug) for causing deaths and diabetes and tardives dyskinesia or TD (partly because of vaccine-injury and partly because of the enormous rates of TD, drugs for movement disorders have become the second most popular drugs prescribed to children below five). The drug companies were forced to settle for billions (go to http://www.psychrights.org and look up " Zyprexa " ) Though the prescribing doctor will not admit to this, the rate of severe side effects among children is astronomical from second generation antipsychotics- really from all the psychiatric drugs. Do go to Breggin's site (http://www.breggin.com) and read as many articles as you can stomach. It's hard reading this stuff, but it will help you to understand the risks to your child and can also help you to have skepticism towards what these doctors are telling you. Be aware that withdrawal from any psychiatric drug can be dangerous and you need professional supervision for it. This is not a directive to withdraw your child- this is your choice- but just in case you wish to do so, given the information on the drugs, be sure to do it carefully and with professional oversight. Your current psychiatrist will fight you if you ask to have your child removed from the drug and may not help you to do it safely. Some mainstream psychiatrists and doctors are very sneaky about it, so be warned: even if they agree to withdraw the child, they can recommend an unsafe schedule of withdrawal by withdrawing the child too quickly and without warning that the child could have adverse reactions- even withdrawal psychosis- up to a month after withdrawal. Some know that the parents will run back in fear, begging to have their child put back on the drug, misunderstanding that the reaction is due to withdrawal and not to some " underlying psychiatric condition " . This may seem a paranoid way to look at it, but I've known many people to whom it's happened and it's documented in lawsuits and research that some doctors do this. To get more information and links on professionals who can oversee and monitor withdrawal, go to: http://www.icspp.org ( " International Center for the Study of Psychiatry and Psychology " )and search through the " places to get help " links. Also look at the " contact us " page and email the regional director located closest to where you live. Ask for a referral to a psychiatrist in your area. This is thirty-year old organization which has devoted itself to educating the public about the effects of these drugs on children in particular. The membership is professional mental health workers who don't believe in drugging kids. They range in background from psychiatric social workers to Harvard trained psychiatrists. One board member is an anti- thimerosal activist as well. ASD/Aspergers (otherwise known as " environmentally poisoned " ) children can be very gifted- they quite frequently are to the point that many vaccine-toxin researchers have suggested that there may be some correlation between high intelligence and susceptiblity to mercury poisoning and other toxins. The " genetic " theories of ASD describe the disorder as " naturally occurring " , hopeless and incurable. Research in the past ten years is showing that this is probably not the case. The people here are a wealth of information on chelating for toxic metals, special diets and supplements to help children recover in the case that they have been environmentally poisoned or injured by vaccines. Ask as many questions as you need to and read everything in the files here and everything you can get your hands on. If there is anything in your child which needs to be addressed, I don't think the doctors you've been to or your children's present school staff are qualified to determine this. > > > > > > hello i am new here and my son was just diagnosed as having > > aspergers > > > we went to one appt with the psychiatrist and he just looked at > > what > > > i had wrote talked to me and my son for a bit and said he has > > > it???????? he is 5 yrs old > > > > *Did he recently have 5 year vaccines? Went thru' similar with my " add " kids years ago - walked out when he advised the popular med (name?) and said, " if he reacts, he has add. " which, by then, I had read enough to know better myself....I second the idea of looking into a second opinion, if you are pursuing a diagnosis. he is 5 yrs old me and my hubby are very confused and > unsure if he has this or not we do realize he has a hard time with > having and keeping friends he sort of isolates himself in school from > the other kids and he has a really huge anger problem which he was > just put on risperdal for i guess im looking for more information on > this the dr just called it this and explained it wasnt affecting his > intelligence as he is a very smart kid but his social and mature > levels he didnt even inform me it was a type of autism i learned that > on the internet and through another lady whos son was diagnosed in > feb i have noticed what he does with his hands and it always reminded > me of a child with autism but he can talk to me so i never thought he > could have autism there needs to be more of an awareness of what this > is my mother-in-law wont listen she believes i am being ridiculous > and there is nothing wrong with her grandchild that he is a normal > kid i m not entirely sure the dr is correct but i do know something > isnt right i know my child and i know that he tries so hard to be > good and not hit and kick and bite and he feels so bad when he does > hes a loving kid always has been but he has these mood swings and > then he regrets what he did any info would help me thank you > I would also add that for my high maintenance " angel-devil " incredibly smart " add " child, eliminating food colorings made the biggest difference, with additives & etc sooo helping also...he once bit a principal...yeah, that was " fun & interesting. " For my own sanity (and helping him cope), books like PET, by T. Gordon & such, were the most helpful...I know there are similar, more current types of books now also. (I Like my old books, go figure) In hindsight, I do believe Lead poisoning was the biggest issue for my older kids - from the bits you wrote, sounds familiar... MIL issues...yep, mainly called my kids inexplicably " high maintenance " and went from there... good luck & best wishes elizabeth
Guest guest
Hi - everyone else is doing a great job with letting youknow what is available -all I would add is that you find a good DAN or Pfeiffer doctor as soon as possible & get him tested for Kryptopyrroles. If he has a pyrrole disorder then that may account for his anger - they can get huge mood swings, meltdowns & tantrums for no reason. You need to check his B6, zinc, & copper levels too. My son had it & it has now been resolved by going on the Pfeiffer primer - he went from 31.2 to 4.8 in 4 months (high to normal) - so if he has it, it is an easy one to fix. Hang in there colleen mum to Tommy (3 ASD) > > hello i am new here and my son was just diagnosed as having aspergers > we went to one appt with the psychiatrist and he just looked at what > i had wrote talked to me and my son for a bit and said he has > it???????? he is 5 yrs old me and my hubby are very confused and > unsure if he has this or not we do realize he has a hard time with > having and keeping friends he sort of isolates himself in school from > the other kids and he has a really huge anger problem which he was > just put on risperdal for i guess im looking for more information on > this the dr just called it this and explained it wasnt affecting his > intelligence as he is a very smart kid but his social and mature > levels he didnt even inform me it was a type of autism i learned that > on the internet and through another lady whos son was diagnosed in > feb i have noticed what he does with his hands and it always reminded > me of a child with autism but he can talk to me so i never thought he > could have autism there needs to be more of an awareness of what this > is my mother-in-law wont listen she believes i am being ridiculous > and there is nothing wrong with her grandchild that he is a normal > kid i m not entirely sure the dr is correct but i do know something > isnt right i know my child and i know that he tries so hard to be > good and not hit and kick and bite and he feels so bad when he does > hes a loving kid always has been but he has these mood swings and > then he regrets what he did any info would help me thank you >
Guest guest
Just my 2C for what it's worth to try to help the child from being " framed into a man-made diagnosis created by Dr. Aspberger. My comment is: Dr. Asperger's Syndrome is just a label; just like Autism is a label; Depression is a label; OCD is a label and so on. All of these " disease are not really diseases...Can you imagine calling a child who apeaks overly-formally as being " autistic ??? All of these are just man-made descriptons or labels of other people's behavior. Look beyond the label to your child's inner-beauty If I came from Japan and I bowed my head three times as I was taught; a Doctor could actually diagnose me as having obsessive-compulsive disorder; jusf for following ancient oriental customs. And a Doctor could actually put a Japanese immmigrant on a psychiatric drug because the student will not stop bowing or performing other ancient traditions as he was taught by his elders. So is bowing 3 times as done in Japan a custom or a mental-disorder? (I say bowing three times is an ancient custom not a disorder...) So be very careful of letting strangers (like Dr.s) place labels on your child who has not even begun to develop; emotionally or intellectually; and recall this; Children diagnosed with Dr. Asperberger's Syndrome are known to be; Super-intelligent ! They are also called " Little Professors because they speak in overly formal tones. I was just reading about it last night coincidentally...and i asked myself this... If children with Dr. Aspergerger's Syndrome speak in overly formerly ways and are little gentlemen with high intelligence. How could they be called Autistic...? WHEN AUTISTIC GENERALLY REFERS TO THOSE KIDS WHO HAVE TROUBLE SPEAKING AND OR COMMUNICATING? Are you going to tell me because a child likes to spend time alone this child is Autistic? I PERSONALLY BELIEVE AUTISM IS ALSO ANOTHER LABEL and here is the problem; NOT ALL CHILDREN DEVELOP EQUALLY; girls develop before boys. I would be very wary of the prescription drug you mention. I can tell you first hand those drugs do affect the mind negatively in terms of increasing depresseion; not lessening; atleast for me. I would urge you to trust your mother-in-law on this one. remember Mozart; and many other Geniuses were Aspergers; autistic. Don't let modern day society limit your child's inner-intelligence. and even if your child is not highly intellgient; then draw out your child's other talents like art music dancing singsing even tv shows! Don't depress your child's mind with too many drugs and medicines. The whole key is using Nutrients to improve your child's condititon. THEN WHEN YOUR CHILD IS WELL FROM NUTRIENTS the Doctors will not prescibe too many drugs and medicines and this is the whole key....avoiding drugs and medicines... instead using natrual foods and vitamins;minerals;and other nutrients. Once your child gets on the band wagon of prescription drugs the prescription drugs may not only affect yoru child's mind adversely esp. if given at a young age; presctiption drugs also deplete certain nutrients; some drugs cause drug induced Vitamin Defieinces; particuarly a Vitamin B6 Defiency. A Vitamin B1 deficieny is caused by Diuretics. So in essence; to all parents; a. do your own evaluation; if you think your child is smarter or better than the doctors say; then stand by your own judegment. You know your child better than anyone. in a nutshell; no matter what the label; Vitamin B with Thiamine will help your child to focus and pay attention at home and at achool. And this is my own peroanl opinion from all i have seen and read. Note: i think Autism literally means; " inabilty to talk and speak. > > > > hello i am new here and my son was just diagnosed as having > aspergers > > we went to one appt with the psychiatrist and he just looked at > what > > i had wrote talked to me and my son for a bit and said he has > > it???????? he is 5 yrs old me and my hubby are very confused and > > unsure if he has this or not we do realize he has a hard time with > > having and keeping friends he sort of isolates himself in school > from > > the other kids and he has a really huge anger problem which he was > > just put on risperdal for i guess im looking for more information > on > > this the dr just called it this and explained it wasnt affecting > his > > intelligence as he is a very smart kid but his social and mature > > levels he didnt even inform me it was a type of autism i learned > that > > on the internet and through another lady whos son was diagnosed in > > feb i have noticed what he does with his hands and it always > reminded > > me of a child with autism but he can talk to me so i never thought > he > > could have autism there needs to be more of an awareness of what > this > > is my mother-in-law wont listen she believes i am being ridiculous > > and there is nothing wrong with her grandchild that he is a normal > > kid i m not entirely sure the dr is correct but i do know > something > > isnt right i know my child and i know that he tries so hard to be > > good and not hit and kick and bite and he feels so bad when he > does > > hes a loving kid always has been but he has these mood swings and > > then he regrets what he did any info would help me thank you > > >
