Guest guest
Just sent this letter via email to the special teacher assigned to Dylan (12-yr-old, Aspergers) and other kids on the autism spectrum at his school. We had an ARD meeting yesterday that went well and I was looking forward to what we're planning to do. And now this. I'm SO FREAKIN' MAD RIGHT NOW. How dare some stupid punk kid hurt my son. My stomach is in knots. Not really asking for advice or anything (but share it if you have some!), but I just needed to tell this to people who I know will understand. " Dylan was injured by a student today at lunch time in the courtyard. He said a 7th grade boy named threw a rock at him and it hit him on the nose. You can see an obvious injury (cut over 1/2 an inch long) to his nose, just below where his glasses sit. He said the boy said something like " Aw, man. I was trying to hit your glasses. " after it hit him in the face. I'm worried, sad, and very angry about this incident. This is why I mentioned unstructured time and asking about supervision at the ARD meeting yesterday. If Dylan is going to go into the courtyard at lunch time, he needs someone there to specifically watch out for him. I will be going up to the school tomorrow to report this to the security officer and to the assistant principal. Dylan did not tell anybody about this when it happened. He also had trouble doing this last year too. I think he becomes very overwhelmed and has a hard time processing what to do, what to say, etc... He cannot be bullied at school though, Ms. Cook. I know you already know that and agree, but I just have to say it. I worry so much for him socially, his feelings, his self-esteem...it's very hard. But to think he could be injured physically by a kid at his school is just beyond me. This cannot happen. Last year it started later in the year but we are only one month in and we've already had an incident. "
