Debra mentions Dr. Temple Grandin in her email below. Just in case there

are folks out there who are not familiar with Dr. Grandin she is an amazing

and dynamic speaker. Below is a link to a presentation she delivered on

Autism/Aspergers. Be aware it's 80 minutes long, but well worth watching!

It's true!!!

Tune in for this unusual presentation on autism by someone with autism.

Animal Science professor Temple Grandin, who designs livestock handling

facilities, discusses the value of early intervention in autism, and about

medications. Other topics include her sensory sensitivities and how she

manages them, how she and other autistic people think, and social

relationships and careers. Series: " M.I.N.D. Institute Lecture Series on

Neurodevelopmental Disorders " [6/2007]

>Well, as a pediatric neurologist, I agree with and Ruthie as you are

>living my life. There is something different about my autistic son

>compared to bipolar, ODD, ADHD, etc. but he pretty much meets criteria for

>all of these. We have been to many experts with him and the better the

>specialist, the more they wrap it into just autism. People who don't know

>autism at all start to give 15 labels. Regardless, I just want answers on

>how to treat it, medicate it, live with it, etc. Even some of the autism

> " experts " we have seen don't quite grasp it all. I actually was able to go

>to dinner with Temple Grandin. We discussed my son briefly and she " got

>it " and had the same ideas I had regarding treatment, etc. There are

>things I know are right that experts will disagree with that Temple Grandin

>agreed with me whole heartedly. The science/experts are not quite up to

>speed yet. The meds work sometimes, only for a while, have side effects,

>etc. Aspergers is a relatively new diagnosis and folks don't quite know

>what they are doing yet. What I do see, however, is lots of people trying

>to make lots of money off these poor parents. I learn more from this site

>than anywhere else. Our daughter is now becoming very obvious as she gets

>older. We are just realizing it and it is depressing.

>Well, that is my two cents. Sorry it isn't more upbeat. I am kind of

>burned out on autism lately with my daughter and son both. We are

>homeschooling my son which is a godsend but I can't imagine doing both

>children at home and I think that it may be in our future at some point. I

>wish there was truly support out there for these kids and families. It is

>so socially isolating, exhausting, frustrating, draining.......not to

>mention incredibly expensive. If you aren't spending the money, doing

>something, you feel as if you aren't giving your kids a chance. When we

>spend the money for services, therapy, " experts " , etc. and we see very

>little they have to offer or very little improvement, it also is

>frustrating.

>

>OK, I'm rambling. Sorry. It has just been one of those weeks. Just

>finally came to grips with my daughter being fully autistic as well this

>week and I am really down over this. I don't know how we can do two of

>them fully symptomatic when one is all we can handle.....
