Guest guest
Mark – We also live in Texas and I would like some info on this program. Do you have a contact name, email, or phone number? My 18yo son is a senior in a private school for students with Aspergers. He wants to go to college and do something in computers but certainly will not be ready to go off to a traditional college. I do know of a program called College Living Experience in Austin which I have heard good things about but it is $35,000/year which does not include college tuition or books. Guest guest
Hi , Please send me an email off-line. As you can imagine a program like this is a dream for many with ASD children/young adults. I am sure Dr. Millie Gore would love to email and correspond with you. Please remember that this is a Pilot program and in its first year. I have every intention to make it well known in Texas and seek to have our State legislators create a program like this throughout our State and in college campuses across Texas. I am very committed to helping our State and ASD families. My email is markdebc<at>tx.rr.com You can imagine that Dr. Millie Gore is swamped with people who want to be in this program. I am so fortunate and very grateful to have my DS in this program. Guest guest
As a 19 year old who was diagnosed with Asperger's at 4, I agree that society needs to be more understanding of our social difference(s). However, the famous s Hopkins University Pediatric Neurosurgeon Carson had learning difficulties at a time when disability support services did not recognize LD at colleges. Look at where he is now as well as Washington University Hospital Pediatric Director Mark Batshaw. Guest guest
Hi , No, I am from the Dallas area. All of the families that got accepted at MSU are from the Dallas or Fort Worth area. As you can see, the desperation and need to find programs is high. I want so much for our State and Oklahoma as well to see the huge, huge need for our families. I am greatly concerned and know that enough is not out there for our families. I really know the Dallas-Fort Worth programs better. If you email me off-line, maybe Dr. Millie Gore can help as far as programs at Midwestern State University. They have social skills programs through the Undergraduate and Graduate students at the school. In other words, they know about ASD and how to address social cognitive skill gaps and weaknesses. I know they are familiar with Winner as well and that is a good sign. markdebc<at>tx.rr.com As far as other needs such as Occupational Therapy, Speech and other educational benefits like reading I am not sure. I will try to learn more about Wichita Falls services when I go back up there for another visit to see DS :>) Mark > > mark, > > do you live in wichita falls? Guest guest
OMG, this is so wonderful. I love your son's quote about the golden ticket. Brought tears to my eyes thinking maybe there will be something like it in all colleges when it's 's turn. Guest guest
, Please understand that the Autism spectrum is wide and there may others who struggle more than you or Neurosurgeon Carson. I appreciate your desire to compliment examples of people who have succeeded on their own, but for some of our ASD loved ones the ability to compete in the open market and to take care of all independent life skills may be beyond them. I know you mean well. Please remember that the Autism spectrum is very wide and there are others who may not be as self-proficient. Guest guest
Very well said, Mark! And, while I don’t want to minimize Dr. Carson’s struggles, learning disabilities and ASD are not the same thing.
