Kerry,

Welcome to the board!!! I am so glad that you found us. Our daughter has been

wearing a locally made helmet for treatment of her plagio since she was about

9 months old. She is almost 14 months old now and still wearing it. (Probably

only for a few more weeks) We saw absolutely no change in her behavior

patterns, sleeping patterns or anything else for that matter! She does not

seem uncomfortable with it at all. We have taken it off for a day or two here

and there whenever she runs a fever, but otherwise we are 23/7! She started

walking about the same time she got the helmet (9months) and it hasn't slowed

her down one bit! She is now running, climbing and sliding on her slide with

it on! We have had very good luck with our helmet and our orthotist has made

all the difference. He is great!!

I wish you and your baby good luck with your helmet and I want you to know we

are here for you as you go through this experience. There is a wealth of info

and support on this group - it is AWESOME!!!

Please keep us posted!

*Thank you M. for inviting me here!*

My son Aiden is due to recieve his helmet for plagiocephaly on March

20th. I'm new to the termanology, but basically he's flat in the

back with a slight angle on the right side. He was born premature (4

months early)and spent 5 months in the NICU, most of them on his back

and right side to recover from several surgeries. Although he's

an " older " boy at 14 months old, he's more in the 10 month range to

correct for his prematurity, plus he's still got a LOT of growing to

do since he is a triplet born very small at 1.4 pounds. The doctors

seem optomistic helmet therapy will work despite his technical age.

My first question, of many to come, is how did your children react to

their helmets? Did their sleep pattern alter, did they

seem " uncomfortable " at all or irritable those initial days and weeks?

Thanks much!

Hi Kerry! Welcome to the group!

My first question, of many to come, is how did your children react to their helmets? Did their sleep pattern alter, did they seem "uncomfortable" at all or irritable those initial days and weeks?

My daughter, Hanna did really well in her band. She didn't ever fuss over it. The first day or 2, she would pull away while putting the band on her head, but didn't have any problem with it once it was on. She slept soundly the first night, and every night after. She was never cranky in any way.

Some babies do fuss a bit, and some take several days or weeks to get used to the idea, but I've never heard of anyone throwing in the towel because of fussiness.

I think Aiden will do just fine, given his adjusted age. We have some kids here who started treatment very late (19/20 months!!) and still saw good improvement! You may not see perfection, but improvement is always a good thing. :o)

I see you only list 2 of your triplets. I assume you lost one. :o( How terrible that must have been for you and your family.

Welcome to the group!! Congratulations on your children! I can't imagine 4

months early...my twins were 2 1/2 months early and one had plagio from tort

and inutero positioning. How big were they at birth? I am sorry that you

lost a child also. You have already been through so much in the short time

they have been with you. We NICU mommies get a thick skin very quickly!!

I had moments where I wondered if needed to be " put through

anything more " but then I quickly realized that this little guy fought for

his life so hard that I owed him the best chance I could for a normal life -

and for us that meant the DOC band. The 4 1/2 months in it went so quickly.

You'll find great support here...hope things go well for you!

Thanks for the welcome Sue- AND everybody else who so warmly welcomed

me here!! What a kind group of people!!

Sue, the boys were 1 pound 4 ounces at birth. We have been through a

series of traumatic events for sure... but you're right, we've

become " thick skinned " and are making the best out of all that's

happened.
