From: Miriam Banash <callis4773@...>Subject: ( ) bad day, hilarious day"Asperger" < >Date: Monday, September 29, 2008, 8:31 PM Well, it wasn't too bad, but the special ed teacher left me a message saying she wanted me to be at the school while they talked to about an incident. I thought, OMG, what's he done, what's happened?! I couldn't get the special ed teacher on the phone so I just went right to the school. I didn't have to wait long to find out it wasn't anything REALLY awful, they just wanted to present a unified front. Here's what happened. drew a penis on a desk. He says his hands "went all spazzy". The reason they went all spazzy in this way is because one girl misspelled the word Peninsula. So I guess she wrote Penisula. thinks the word penis is really funny. So the principal and sped teacher wanted my input on how to deal with it. Which is great. They said that normally they'd give a kid in school suspension or detention for defacing property as well as drawing something potentially very offensive and embarrassing. I told them that a detention would have an impact but that it might be REALLY hard for them. They said they wanted to get the message across without him being too devastated. So the principal, who by the way is wonderful and very sweet, had a talk with with me and the sped teacher in the room. He talked about the two problems with what chose to do. He gave lots of opportunities to work out the problems himself and suggested that cleaning some desks tomorrow before he can go to recess might be a good thing to make up for defacing the desk. He asked if he felt this was fair. said it was so he's fine with cleaning desks. He said, "Community service." finds a piece of lingo or a commonly used phrase and just assimilates it into his vocabulary almost like it's one word. The other thing needed to address was the offensiveness of his drawing so the principal asked him if there was anyone he should apologize to. He said the name of the special ed teacher and the teacher whose class he was in at the time. really didn't want to own up to having drawn a penis. He said, "I was trying to draw a dumbbell." But I KNOW he was just not wanting to own up to the behavior. I said, ", is that really true or is it something you just wish was true." He answered again with, "My hands went all spazzy." So the principal talked to him about coping strategies for things he can do when his hands feel that way. He asked if had access to a fidget. He does. Seriously, I love this school. I'm glad they asked me and I can see why they'd want me there to present us as working together. They worried would be terribly upset so they didn't want to ride the bus home. So he came home with me. I swear they think of everything.Miriam

Guest guest
OMG Miriam, that sounds like something collin would do. He too thinks that the word penis is hysterical and he also thinks the name richard or dick is extremly funny also. Is this a boy thing cause his friends are also like this. I can see where he would get penis from penisula cause I could so see collin seeing it that way too. I can hardly wait for sex education, he will be standing out in the class Im sure.LOL gina > > From: Miriam Banash <callis4773@...> > Subject: ( ) bad day, hilarious day > " Asperger " < > > Date: Monday, September 29, 2008, 7:31 PM > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > Well, it wasn't too bad, but the special ed teacher left me a message saying she wanted me to be at the school while they talked to about an incident. He says his hands " went all spazzy " . He gave lots of opportunities to work out the problems > himself and suggested that cleaning some desks tomorrow before he can go to recess might be a good thing to make up for defacing the desk. He asked if he felt this was fair. said it was so he's fine with cleaning desks. He said, " Community service. Guest guest
I think it's a boy thing and an 11 year old thing. But I remember getting into trouble for something similar in 5th grade. Actually, though, mine was more mean spirited. doesn't have a mean bone in his body. Mostly I don't either but we had a student teacher who was mean all the time. Not just strict, but mean and verbally abusive and unfair. So I drew a sloppy, hideous picture of her with big circles with dots in them to signify breasts and wrote " She's on her period " next to it. It was pretty out of character for me and the teacher just screamed like a banshee at me. I owned up to it because I KNEW it was an awful thing to do. Other than the teacher screaming, though, I never got any formal punishment. I didn't do it again, though, either. How embarrassing to admit it. With it was simply the impulse to react to someone writing penis instead of penin at the beginning of Peninsula. ROFL. Guest guest
OMG Miriam, Your story about drawing breasts and writing she is on her period was hysterical. You probably thought you were such a terrible bad person at the time too I bet. I know I stole a tomato out of our neighbors garden and I felt so bad about it I told on myself and got into tons of trouble and had to go tell the neighbor what I did and I just felt horrible. Now when I look back I laugh at such an innocent thing I did but my mom made me out to be a thief.LOL I guess she was teaching me a lesson and you bet your butt I learned it. I never took anything that didnt belong to me after that, I remember some friends of mine were picking lilacs off of a bush for their mothers and I wanted to take my mom some home too cause they are her favorite but I didnt cause I knew that bush didnt belong to me and I would be stealing. Well my mom lost out. HEE HEE Thanks for sharing, -- In , " Miriam " <callis4773@...> wrote: > > I think it's a boy thing and an 11 year old thing. Guest guest
I was pretty ashamed of myself. I think, though, that in tough situations I survive by my sense of humor. It got me into trouble as a child, but now it's quite useful. If I see parents pointing, staring, making nasty comments about my parenting I just can't resist sticking my tongue out at them. ROFL. It's like, " LIGHTEN UP PEOPLE and BE GLAD IT ISN'T YOUR LIFE! " Anyway, it gives me a great sense of superiority that I can deal with my son's difficulties and still laugh. If people don't like me or my kid they're welcome to go somewhere else. LOL. My daughter has a really hard time when someone doesn't like her so I've been working on helping her see the humor in it. There was a mean girl in 1st grade named . She made a club called The Cheetah Girls. Then she told people they couldn't be in the club if they were friends with Rayleigh. also said people had to bring stuff from home to give to her to be in the club. One little girl with a speech delay and probably non verbal learning disability was told she had to bring in all her barbies. Being quite naive she tried to do it but her mom figured it out and wouldn't let her. To help Rayleigh I changed the words of a song we sing every morning. I sing, " Spider on the floor " every day and have done since Rayleigh was a little thing. She's 8 going on 15 now but she wakes up smiling if I do the song. Anyway, when was being rotted I changed the words to " There's a spider on taylor ______ (don't want to say her last name). " I'm also trying to help her see who her real friends are. Rayleigh doesn't have asperger syndrome, but she's a little different too. She's very sensitive, tends to be anxious and also quite shy. So she needs a lot of help with other kids. Guest guest
Miriam.... I hate kids who are so cruel....girls especially can be so mean.....I think teaching her to laugh it off is a good idea.....and explain to her how mean and cruel this girl is and that there is no way she should want to hang out with her....she wanted to take someone else's barbies....that is mean....tell her (your daughter) that she is very special and she doesn't need to join any stupid club....or form your own with her as president....I will join...hee hee!!! Tell her to walk with her head high and remind her that it is not her that has the problem...it is ... is the one with the ego problem....and your daughter is perfect and fine and kind and nice and all that sutff.... LOL.My daughter has a really hard time when someone doesn't like her so I've been working on helping her see the humor in it. Being quite naive she tried to do it but her mom figured it out and wouldn't let her.To help Rayleigh I changed the words of a song we sing every morning. I sing, "Spider on the floor" every day and have done since Rayleigh was a little thing. She's 8 going on 15 now but she wakes up smiling if I do the song. Anyway, when was being rotted I changed the words to "There's a spider on taylor ______ (don't want to say her last name)." I'm also trying to help her see who her real friends are. Rayleigh doesn't have asperger syndrome, but she's a little different too. She's very sensitive, tends to be anxious and also quite shy. So she needs a lot of help with other kids.Miriam> > > > > > > > From: Miriam Banash <callis4773@ >> > > > Subject: ( ) bad day, hilarious day> > > > "Asperger" < >> > > > Date: Monday, September 29, 2008, 7:31 PM> > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > Well, it wasn't too bad, but the special ed teacher left me a > > > message saying she wanted me to be at the school while they > talked > > > to about an incident. Guest guest
Actually, this is exactly what happened. I reminded Rayleigh of all her friends and Rayleigh started a club and the only rule is that everyone had to be nice to everyone else. She called it the Candy Candy club!
